Music For Pictures

The multi talented master of the Warr guitar and stick bass Trey Gunn has played with some of the most adventurous musicians on the planet. He has been extremely active since officially departing King Crimson in 2003, collaborating with KC drummer Pat Mastelotto in TU & KTU, as well as founding a multi-media group Quodia with Joe Mendelson, and working on scoring music for various film and television projects. His latest solo disc Music For Pictures is a compilation of said music recorded between 2003 & 2008, which has been tweaked and manipulated by the man himself with some very interesting and intriguing results.
What you get here are twenty nine songs (some of which are so short they feel like merely sound bytes) that explore a wide range of musical textures and themes. The listener armed with just a song title and an open mind is left to create their own imaginary visuals in their minds to accompany Gun’s free flowing and brief ambient excursions. There are so many musical layers to submerse yourself in, that Music For Pictures should end up offering something for everyone. Tough, muscular rhythms are delivered in tandem with either Mastelotto or fellow drummer Matt Chamberlain, while other tracks which incorporate elements of world beat and electronica, harkens back to his work with KC and the various offshoots of the ProjeKcts. This is cinema for your mind, and it’s also interesting to note that Gunn currently has various filmmakers from all over the globe hard at work contributing new images specifically for the music assembled here. Until then you’re on your own.
