Gareth.T’s “thanos” explores the contradictions of morality — how kindness can emerge from violence, and how the line between good and evil is blurred by circumstance. Written by Wyman Wong, the lyrics confront the paradox of human intention: we seek justice, compassion, and love, yet often act in ways that betray those ideals. The recurring image of blood beneath the Bodhi tree captures this haunting duality — purity shadowed by sacrifice.
The music video, directed by Hanley Chu, grounds these themes in history. Set in the late Han dynasty before the Three Kingdoms era, it follows villagers caught in the chaos of one of Cao Cao’s campaigns. Gareth, a butcher turned protector, fights for both petty and grave wrongdoings, while an unnamed woman embodies mercy, seeking to save in all circumstances. Their contrasting choices reveal how justice and compassion intertwine, yet neither will always lead to an outcome of good. The story mirrors the song’s central question: can good be done without causing harm?
Co-composed with Patrick Yip, the music blends melancholic East Asian melodies, traditional Chinese instruments, and modern production, creating a soundscape as layered as the narrative of the lyrics and music video.
Together, the song and video resonate beyond their historical setting. They do not offer answers, but instead hold up a mirror — challenging us to reflect on the complexity of “doing good” in any era, where every choice carries the weight of consequence.
