2007年是二十世紀傳奇鋼琴家顧爾德七十五歲冥誕，以及逝世二十五週年紀念。顧爾德傳記作者麥可．史泰格曼( Michael Stegemann)以此三部曲來加以紀念。
在概念上，史泰格曼的作品與顧爾德在六○年代末應加拿大廣播電台之邀拍攝的「孤獨三部曲」相呼應。當年的計畫中，顧爾德數次前往加拿大廣袤、冰封的「北地」，追尋他一心嚮往的孤獨，同時也以途中蒐集的聲音素材，剪接成 The Idea of North、 Latecomers、 The Quiet in the Land。顧爾德以 docudrama來稱呼這項探索聲音可能性的孤獨三部曲。史泰格曼由此得到靈感，製作了以「 The Idea of Music、The Drop-Out &The Quiet in the Studio」為名的音樂人生三部曲，將顧爾德的演奏、說話、廣播劇、傳記生平加以融匯，以聲音來探索、呈現顧爾德有如冰封北地深邃而廣袤的一生。
第一部曲【樂思The Idea of Music】收錄1954年，顧爾德為CBS首次錄製巴哈《郭德堡變奏曲》的想法、樂念緣起，以及多首巴哈、貝多芬、葛利格（顧爾德相信葛利格是他的親戚）。第二部曲【退隱The Drop-Out】顧爾德從聲名鵲起到一九六四年決定不再公開演奏這十年間的生命軌跡，除了顧爾德的錄音之外，也收入對他意義重大的萊納( Fritz Reiner) 指揮的貝多芬第三號《英雄》交響曲。第三部曲【錄音間的寧靜The Quiet in the Studio】則是顧爾德在七○年代的生命景況，他遠離人群，花了許多時間在錄音室，只願意透過錄音、錄影和廣播和世界溝通，所以在這張 CD 中，也可以聽到顧爾德當年耗費無數心力剪輯出的廣播節目，見識到這位鋼琴怪傑晚年不為人知的神秘心靈世界。
對顧爾德在藝術上的成就，當然要回歸他留下的錄音；對他生命內涵的認識，當然要透過傳記文字的敘述，而音樂學者、傳記作者 Stegemann 則是透過這套「顧爾德音樂人生三部曲」，一方面呈現了顧爾德藝術成就的縮影，二方面也補足文字傳記無法承載聲音的缺憾，可說是受此獨特藝術家所啟發的獨特紀實。
