数十年来，学界不断呼吁承认中国对于人类学乃至整个与社会科学理论的重要性。这种呼声如今已空前急迫。然而，植根于中国的思想仍然处于边缘，中国经常被视作一个“他者”，而非能够产出普适性理论的源头。本书汲取东亚后殖民研究的学术资源，旨在论证：如果不将中国作为知识生产者和后全球世界的关键行动者来严肃对待，社会科学家就有可能误读全球现状。随着“西方全球化”模式的衰落，以及人类学对民族志与理论之间关系的反思与再评估，中国必须被理解为全球研究的一个寻常而内在的语境。
