This first part of the first volume of the Cambridge Ancient History series examines the prehistory of the Near East, beginning with an overview of the geological ages and continues through the early human settlements, and then the lithic and chalcolithic periods. The regions examined are: Anatolia, Mesopotamia, the Aegean, Cyprus, and predynastic Egypt.<br /><br />This volume describes in detail the basis for the later development of city based societies in this region.
