《刀锋》是英国著名作家、“故事圣手”毛姆最重要的长篇小说代表作之一。美国青年飞行员拉里•达雷尔在部队里结识了一位爱尔兰战友，在一次战斗中，这位战友为营救拉里而牺牲。拉里因此对人生感到迷惘，弄不懂世界上为什么有恶和不幸。复员后，拉里既不肯进大学，也不肯就业，一心想探求人生的终极。为此，他丢下未婚妻来到巴黎，又从巴黎遍游世界，最后到了印度，终于对人生大彻大悟，返回美国，当上了出租车司机，大隐隐于市。《刀锋》的主人公拉里以著名哲学家维特根斯坦为原型，生动而又深刻地探讨和展现了西方整整一代知识分子上下求索人生意义的心路历程。
