Saul Leiter: The Centennial Retrospective [图书] Goodreads
Thames & Hudson 2023 - 11
Celebrating the centennial of Saul Leiter’s birth, the official retrospective of a revolutionary figure in twentieth-century photography.  Saul Leiter photographed and painted nearly every day for over sixty years, amassing an enormous archive, most of which remained unseen during his lifetime. Finding inspiration within a few blocks of his apartment in lower Manhattan, he was a master at discovering beauty in the most ordinary places. Celebrated today for his evocative color photographs of New York in the 1950s and 1960s, which were unknown in their day, Leiter also found success as a fashion photographer for  Harper’s Bazaar . All the while he was shooting black-and-white street scenes on his daily walks, and nudes and intimate portraits back home, while continuing his painting explorations with abstract watercolors, whimsical sketchbooks, and painted photographs. Created in collaboration with the Saul Leiter Foundation, this definitive monograph brings together these diverse yet interconnected bodies of work―including much that was previously unpublished―to reveal the complete artist for the first time. 340 illustrations / 155 in color
Son Album [

Sleeping By the Mississippi [
Alec Soth / Patricia Hampl Steidl Publishing 2004
Sleeping by the Mississippi by Alec Soth is one of the defining publications in the photobook era. First published by Steidl in 2004, it was Soth's first book, sold through three editions, and established him as one of the leading lights of contemporary photographic practice. This MACK edition launches to coincide with the first exhibition in London dedicated to the series at Beetles+Huxley gallery, and includes two new photographs that were not included in the previous versions of the book. Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Sleeping by the Mississippi captures America's iconic yet oft-neglected 'third coast'. Soth's richly descriptive, large-format colour photographs present an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. Sensuous in detail and raw in subject, Sleeping by the Mississippi elicits a consistent mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie. 'In the book's 46 ruthlessly edited pictures', writes Anne Wilkes Tucker in the original essay published in the book, 'Soth alludes to illness, procreation, race, crime, learning, art, music, death, religion, redemption, politics, and cheap sex.' Like Robert Frank's classic The Americans, Sleeping by the Mississippi merges a documentary style with poetic sensibility. The Mississippi is less the subject of the book than its organizing structure. Not bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessentially American spirit of wanderlust. Thirteen years since the book was first published, the artist's lyrical view has undoubtedly acquired a nuanced significance - one in which hope, fear, desire and regret coalesce in the evocative journey along this mythic river.

The Last Resort [
Martin Parr Dewi Lewis Publishing 2010 - 8
A new edition of a modern classic of photography. Martin Parr is Europe's premier contemporary photographer, and The Last Resort is the book that is considered to have launched his career. Taken at the height of the Thatcher years, it depicts the "great British seaside" in all its garish glory. Described by some as cruel and voyeuristic and by others as a stunning satire on the state of Britain, early editions are now much sought after by collectors worldwide. Includes a new essay by Gerry Badger, photographer, architect, curator, and critic.
Martin Parr Dewi Lewis Publishing 2007 - 11
Small World is a biting and very funny satire in which Martin Parr observes global tourism and the tourist's search for authentic cultures that are themselves destroyed in that search.
Martin Parr [
Martin Parr Aperture 2006 - 10
For much of his career, Martin Parr has specialized in skewering the eccentricities and peculiarities of his native Great Britain--in particular those having to do with food, tourism, bad fashion choices and more food. Mexico is Parr's first new thematic series to be published in book form since 2002, a distinct geographical departure, and in part a greater departure as well. Parr is struck not only by Mexican culture, but also by the clear impact of America's pop culture and economy on Mexican life--the juxtaposition of Mickey Mouse with brightly colored saints, Nike logos with Day of the Dead skulls and Coca Cola with cacti. Here viewers are in recognizable territory with Parr's colorful close-ups of food, hats, signs and souvenirs, garishly shot with medical efficiency--but Mexico also includes some straight records of human faces, images that capture photographer and subject in the act of mutual contemplation. These moments of mercy are one with the underlying theme of Parr's more ironic work, calling up equally the corruption of authentic cultural forms by global consumer culture, which he both critiques and celebrates. As Parr puts it, "What I am saying is that it's a good and a bad thing. I'm constantly trying to express ambiguity. And that's what photography does very well."
Hong Kong Parr [
Martin Parr Gost Books 2014 - 9
British documentary photographer and photojournalist Martin Parr turns his lens on the vibrant metropolis of Hong Kong, where his characteristic take on aspects of modern life continues at times to be both intimate and satirical. This series of images portrays familiar and everyday scenes of leisure, consumption and transit in the city. Food is a central theme, though Parr often seeks out those things which may be curiosities to Westerners. He also has a talent for capturing fleeting moments of simultaneity, wherein individuals, their possessions and actions align in amusing vignettes. His keen and observant eye paints a living portrait of the city, seemingly in a completely new way.
Life's a Beach [
Martin Parr Aperture 2013 - 5
Following on the heels of Martin Parr’s limited-edition, album-style publication Life’s a Beach, Aperture now presents this beach-friendly mini edition. Parr has been photographing the topic of the beach for many decades, documenting sunbathers, rambunctious swimmers caught mid-plunge and the eternal sandy picnic. His international career, in fact, could well be traced to the publication of The Last Resort (1986), which depicted the seaside resort of New Brighton, near Liverpool. What is perhaps less known is that this obsession has led Parr to photograph beaches around the world. This compilation, his first on the topic, presents photos of beachgoers on far-flung shores, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Thailand, and of course, the U.K. The compilation brings to the forefront Parr’s engagement with a cherished subject matter-that rare public space in which general absurdities and local quirks seamlessly fuse together. This book shows Parr at his best, startling us with moments of captured absurdity and immersing us in rituals and traditions associated with beach life the world over.
Sokyusha 2023
With its subjects and settings ranging from mountain sceneries, forests, children, villages, miscellaneous objects, interiors, ponds and close-ups, Masahito Agake’s “Roganfudoki” (lit. “Hazy-eyed Record of a Region”) captures the world as a place imbued with mystery and an ominous atmosphere. Through complex layers, Agake recreates the memories and sense of wonder of his childhood and captures the growth of his own son, all the while referencing traditions and techniques from the history of Japanese photography. But rather than simply offering nostalgia, “Roganfudoki” opens doors between the present and the past, between memories and dreams yet to be fulfilled.

“Perhaps one of the fundamental motivations for photography is to anticipate loss. While retracing the techniques of a century ago, Agake is looking into the future in which what exists now will be lost. Looking into a future full of uncertainty, his vision becomes blurry, yet he tries to reach out to touch what he sees—this reflects his longing to touch and hold onto things that may soon be lost.”
― from Masako Todo’s afterword (all texts in Japanese & English)
Kurayami [
With “Kurayami,” Japanese photographer Masao Yamamoto and Japanese musician Akira Uchida deepen the dialogue that began with their collaborative photobook “Sasanami” in 2020.
In “Kurayami” (lit. “darkness”), Yamamoto lets his visual language unfold over two chapters (“Side A” and “Side B”). With darkness always an element, his pictures engage themes of nature and essence, always loaded with a sense of mystery and latent danger. Light and darkness feature as main subjects or as mere tools, as single elements among many or as oppressive presences.
Like their previous collaboration, Yamamoto’s photographs and Uchida’s music are meant to be experienced simultaneously—the music adding to the images, the images adding to the music.

Each copy of the book includes a coupon for a free download of Akira Uchida's music.
