《玛丽与朱利安故事》是1975年导演雅克·里维特的“鬼故事系列”中的一部。原计划分别以爱情、侦破、西部和歌舞这四个传统电影类型拍成四部关于“鬼”的电影，合起来又是个统一的故事。《玛丽与朱利安的故事》是这个计划的第一部“爱情片”，里维特先拍摄了其中的两部之后，就开始了《玛丽与朱利安的故事》的拍摄，但随即就停止了。里维特解释说：“两部电影的拍摄，每一部都有自己的风格，我已经非常疲惫了，但是我给自己设下的陷阱”。20多年后，里维特重新拾这个计划。影片保留了20几年前里维特设计的结构，全片共分成四个相对均等的单元，分别是“朱利安”、“朱利安与玛丽”、“玛丽与朱利安”和“玛丽”，按照当年的设想，这是从“生者世界”向“亡者世界”的一种过渡。第一部分“朱利安”讲述了玛丽的出现，并进入了朱利安的生活；第二部分“朱利安与玛丽”讲述以朱利安为主动的二人生活，第三部分“玛丽与朱利安”里，玛丽成为了两个人生活的主人，第四部分“玛丽”描述朱利安知道玛丽是个亡魂之后如何被她的魅力所吸引而渴望死亡，最后两个人的爱情超越了生死。里维特让爱表达在两个人的动作和对白中，使影片更接近于戏剧的方式。

When Parisian accountant Alex (Gilbert Melki) stumbles upon a routine identity check, he stops to watch. The police tell him to move along, but he insists on his right to do what he likes in public, a point of view that earns him a night in the cells. Still outraged in the morning, he is committed to a psychiatric clinic. Then starts an absurd and implacable machinery that plunges Alex inside a sort of kafkaian world. Once in the system, how is he meant to get out?
Emmanuelle Cuau's Very Well, Thank You is a very realistic story of a normal man who got caught up in a system where giving a late sick leave's certificate to your employer can be a motive of dismissal, where watching policemen doing their job can be considered as an "offence". A system, eventually, that shows us that today's society don't take into account the individual, but on the contrary play with him through laws, abuses of power, lies and paperwork.
A subtle, unsentimental political drama that is comic and horrifying by turns.

As in most American criminal cases, the twelve men must unanimously decide on a verdict of "guilty" or "not guilty". (In the justice systems of nearly all American states, failure to reach a unanimous verdict, a so-called "hung jury", results in a mistrial.) The case at hand pertains to whether a young man murdered his own father. The jury is further instructed that a guilty verdict will be accompanied by a mandatory death sentence. These twelve then move to the jury room, where they begin to become acquainted with the personalities of their peers. Throughout their deliberation, not a single juror calls another by his name because the names are unknown by the jurors. Several of the jurors have different reasons for discriminating against the witness: his race, his background, and the troubled relationship between one juror and his own son.
