Forget Halloween! Lea Michele will drop her first-ever Christmas album, Christmas in the City, on Oct. 25, inspired by her early holiday memories from her hometown of New York City.
Michele will cover the yuletide classics, including “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Silent Night,” “Silver Bells,” “O Holy Night” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” from Frozen.
“It was always my dream to make a Christmas record,” Michele told People. “Christmas is so special to me. It’s such an important time of year for me and my family that I have so many incredible memories from.”
She recruited her fellow Glee cast member (and the voice of Kristoff in Frozen) Jonathan Groff for her cover of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” while another former Glee co-star Darren Criss will join Michele for “White Christmas” and singer-songwriter Cynthia Erivo will sing “Angels We Have Heard on High” with her. Other Glee alums working on the album are the show’s former producers Alex and Adam Anders, who helped with “every single one of the over 800 songs” during the six-year run of the musical comedy-drama. “I wanted to bring back that sound from Glee -- that very vibrant and bright and powerful sound that we created,” she told People.
Her friends who will be singing with her play an important role in reinvigorating the Christmas spirit with the spirit of Glee in mind. “Jonathan is my best friend in the entire world, and the song we’re singing on the record, ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas,’ we’ve been singing together for over 10 years,” Michelle recalled. “Darren and I are dear friends so it was only natural that I would have him come on the record with me. My third very special guest is the incredible Cynthia Erivo, and if you don’t know Cynthia, you’re going to know her soon.”
The 33-year-old singer/actress also included the original track “Christmas in New York” on the album. “I wrote this song as my real love letter,” she told People. “It’s the anthem of the album, and it just highlights all of the special things New York has to offer. It paints this beautiful picture of New York, but it also is really about what it means to be with your family and friends and engaged in that holiday spirit.”

Ragtime (1998 Original Broadway Cast) [音乐] 豆瓣

The epic sweep of Ragtime is captured in its opening prologue, a nine-minute kaleidoscope of fictional characters mingling with historical figures from the early 20th century as originally captured in E.L. Doctorow's sprawling novel. As the story continues, we meet pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Brian Stokes Mitchell) and his child's mother, Sarah (Audra McDonald), who has been taken in by a respectable family (including Marin Mazzie as Mother). Parallel story lines of the Latvian immigrant Tateh (Peter Friedman), the entertainer Evelyn Nesbit (Lynnette Perry), and even Harry Houdini (Jim Corti) and Emma Goldman (Judy Kaye) eventually mingle and merge. Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on This Island) mix marches, cakewalks, and of course ragtime to create a rich, compelling score, including Sarah's song to her baby, "Your Daddy's Son," her soaring duet with Coalhouse, "Wheels of a Dream," Mother's self-revealing "Back to Before," and numerous set pieces, all performed by a perfect cast. Ragtime was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 1998, with wins for McDonald, original score, book, and orchestration. The CD also includes an eight-minute symphonic suite conducted by Paul Gemignani and a booklet with photos, full lyrics, and a history of how the score was written. Tragic, touching, and ultimately triumphant, Ragtime is an American classic. --David Horiuchi
