The London five-piece Tom Dougall, Dominic O’Dair, Maxim Barron, Charlie Salvidge and Max Oscarnold release their first album on Tough Love and their fourth for the world. It’s recorded in home studios, mixed at Studio B in South London and completely self-produced.
Insistent marching pop beats drive a hole through the fuzz guitar forest. Twangy guitars are understated but at the same time bursting at the seams with little tricky riffs, melodies and flourishes. Innocence and sadness and the feeling of losing something you’ve never had.

TOY, 일곱 번째 앨범 ‘Da Capo’
유희열의 원맨 프로젝트 토이의 정규 7집 앨범 ‘Da Capo’가 무려 7년이라는 시간이 흘러 세상에 나왔습니다.
‘Da Capo’는 단어가 내포한 의미 그대로를 담은 앨범입니다. ‘처음부터 다시 혹은 처음부터 반복해서’라는 뜻입니다. 유희열은 그동안 써놨던 곡들을 비우고 마음이 가는 대로 작업을 진행했습니다. 녹음했다가 지우고, 고민 끝에 완성된 곡을 포기하고, 묵혀놨던 레코딩 파일을 다시 꺼내는 과정이 반복됐습니다. 지독하게 손 때 묻은 과정들로 채색된 ‘Da Capo’는 토이 음악 역사에 있어서도 가장 공을 들인 앨범입니다.
‘Da Capo’에는 토이에 최적화된 익숙한, 동시에 낯선 사운드가 적절히 안배돼 담겼습니다. 80년대 작법에서 볼 수 있는 팝적의 멜로디와 퓨전 재즈의 섹션, 발라드의 기조를 품은 안정된 코드 진행에 더해진 과감한 전조, 일렉트로닉적 프로그래밍과 모던록의 어프로치까지 기존 토이를 수식하는 음악적 방향을 여전히 지니고 있는 가운데, 복고풍 유러피언 팝의 육감적인 사운드, 소울 음악의 기조를 띤 스트링과 리듬감, 임팩트 있는 랩과 가공되지 않은 청아한 목소리 등 이전의 토이와는 차별된 경향 역시 유기적으로 혼합된 느낌을 줍니다.
이번 앨범에는 같은 소속사인 페퍼톤스의 멤버 신재평의 주도적인 편곡과 프로그래밍 참여로 과거에 비해 좀 더 과감한 소리들을 담았습니다. 가수 이상순도 ‘피아니시모’에 기타 선율을 얹으면 중심적인 역할을 했습니다.
이적, 김동률, 성시경, 선우정아, 권진아, 이수현(악동뮤지션), 김예림, 크러쉬, 다이나믹 듀오, 빈지노, 자이언티 등 가요계를 주도하는 뮤지션들은 객원보컬로 참여해 ‘Da Capo’의 화려함을 더했습니다.
타이틀 곡은 성시경이 부른 ‘세 사람’, 토이의 히트곡인 ‘좋은 사람’의 2014년 버전으로, 예전 토이 스타일의 청춘이나 사랑을 담은 곡이 그리운 분들에게 뜻깊은 선물이 될 것입니다.
이 밖에 인트로 격인 연주곡 ‘아무도 모른다’, 과거 자신의 홈페이지에 썼던 글을 토대로 만든 ‘Reset’, 토이식 캐롤곡 ‘Goodbye sun, Goodbye moon’, 호소력 짙은 팝 곡 ‘너의 바다에 머무네’, 디지털 시대의 아날로그적 설렘을 묘사한 ‘U&I’, 수록곡 중 가장 마지막에 녹음이 끝난 ‘인생은 아름다워’, 두근거리고 조심스러운 감정을 묘사한 짧은 연주곡 ‘피아노’, 그 테마에 가사를 붙여 완성한 ‘피아니시모’, 권진아의 재평가 ‘그녀가 말했다’, 가장 실험적인 곡인 ‘언제나 타인’, 유희열이 부른 ‘우리’, ‘취한 밤’까지 60분 간 이어지는 토이의 이야기에 마음을 빼앗겨 버리실 겁니다.

4집 이후 2년반만에 유희열이 이끄는 프로젝트 그룹 "토이(Toy)"가 새로운 앨범으로 돌아왔다. 특히 이번 5집에는 그의 오랜 음악 동반자인 이승환, 김연우, 윤상, 이적, 조트리오, 성시경, 김형중, 롤러 코스터가 참여해 끈끈한 음악적 우정을 과시하고 있다. 브라질 민속 리듬 삼바에 조빔의 멜로디 스타일을 섞어 놓은 듯한 첫 곡인 'Fermata'을 비롯해 현악 4중주의 풍성함이 돋보이는 '그대 먼 곳만 보네요', 김형중이 보컬로 참여하고 기존의 토이의 분위기와는 다른 약간 미디엄 템포의 경쾌한 멜로디가 귀에 쏙 들어오는 '좋은 사람', 영화 '화양연화'를 보고 만든 곡인 '두 사람' , 김광민과 윤상이 참여한 '그 끝에 너', 조원선의 건조한 목소리가 이상한 기분으로 몰고가는 '기다립니다' 등 18곡이 수록되었다.
이번 음반의 후반 작업은 이태리에서 세계 최고의 마스터링 스튜디오 중의 하나인 '너틸러스 스튜디오'에서 명성 있는 엔지니어 안토니노 발리오니와 마스터링 작업을 하였다.

'As We Turn' is the new single from TOY, taken from their second album 'Join The Dots'.
The single is released as a limited edition 12” with the additional tracks 'Conductor (Tom Furse Extrapolation remix)' and a new version of the album track 'You Won’t Be The Same', which was recorded for a Part Time Punks radio session on the band’s last visit to LA. The download release comes with the bonus of a Plank remix of 'It’s Been So Long'.
12” vinyl, limited to 600 copies.

Songs Of Consumption is an 8-song collection of unique interpretations of tracks which have inspired the band.
The idea was originally birthed when the band recorded four covers for the bonus 7"s that came with the Dinked and Rough Trade versions of the last album. Three of those songs feature here alongside five new recordings completed last month, which comprise tracks by Stooges, Amanda Lear, Nico, The Troggs, Serge Gainsborough, Soft Cell, John Barry and Pet Shop Boys/Elvis/Willy Nelson (depending on how you know the song).
Talking about the album, TOY said: Songs of Consumption sonically is a continuation and development of the themes conceived on Happy In The Hollow and it will show people where we are going towards musically. The DIY approach was explored further utilising more of the electronic elements that we touched upon before. Drum machines, stripped down arrangements and rudimentary production give a primitive sound that we thought suited the choice of songs. Some of the songs have very big sounding production, so we wanted to experiment with them by going in a different direction.
Music is consumed voraciously now whereas these songs came from a time when the song was of the most important thing and that's what was appreciated. Stripping them back to the essence of what they are was also something we wanted to explore. Also, we wanted to make a covers record with songs by people that influenced us in the past few years and it’s as much about the way they dealt with their ideas, and how they put themselves in uncomfortable situations in order to make something that in the end is simple. It’s a homage to the spirit of these people, that helped us to untangle ourselves from our inherent complicated nature and create a new space where we can exist.
