Borders (al-Hodoud) is a Syrian political satire about an Arab traveler who loses his passport between two fictional Arab countries, and who ends up living on the border between them when neither country agrees to let him in. Made in 1987, the film was a sharp criticism of nationalist regimes that preached Arab unity, yet were far from it – where the Arab citizen loses their own country, as well as their identity. Features the internationally known Syrian actor Duraid Lahham (sometimes known as "the Arab Charlie Chaplin") and a screenplay by the acclaimed Syrian poet and dramatist Mohammad Al-Maghout.
