菲利普（罗伯特·蒙哥马利 Robert Montgomery 饰）是衔着金汤匙出生的富家子弟，患有这精神疾病，在法国留学期间，他就曾因为病发而被关进了精神病院。之后，菲利普逃了出来，并且隐瞒了这些经历返回了英国，回家之后的菲利普和好友沃德（乔治·桑德斯 George Sanders 饰）同时爱上了女秘书斯特拉（英格丽·褒曼 Ingrid Bergman 饰），最终，斯特拉选择了菲利普。
结婚之后，菲利普精神上的问题开始逐渐的暴露，他对斯特拉有着异于常态的控制欲和占有欲，菲利普总是怀疑斯特拉和沃德之间存在着不伦的暧昧关系。母亲去世之后，公司交由菲利普管理，但他并不拥有管理公司的能力，因此公司里爆发了员工骚动，此时，是斯特拉和沃德挺身而出，平息了事端，这让菲利普对沃德更加的痛恨。

本片是根据同名小说改编而成的音乐片版本，因制作方向错误，使得本片成为一部歌舞充斥、华而不实的幼稚之作。全片只有开始的一段还可以观看，不过，导演查尔斯．贾洛特的镜头处理手法还算够水准，史伯特．苏堤斯的摄影技术亦为本片增色不少，片中优美的镜头令人如痴如醉，彼得．芬治、奥利维亚．赫西等人的表演也不俗。

表扬优秀教师的经典之作，饰演主人翁奇普斯先生的罗伯特．多纳特荣获最佳男主角金像奖。导演萨姆．伍德采取倒叙手法，交代拉丁文老师奇普斯从青年时代进入英国布鲁菲学校作画教，一直到六十年后他从该校退休的整个教学生涯，期间经历年轻时的认真木纳，中年时的婚姻幸福与丧妻之痛，乃至晚年的慈蔼宽容，将一个坚守岗位努力教学的好老师从平凡中见伟大的精神发挥得淋漓尽致。英国美女格里尔．加森凭本片的凯蒂一角首次打进好莱坞，戏虽不多却给人留下极佳印象。此外，片中对十九世纪以至第一次世界大战的历史进展也有画龙点睛的描述。
