Village chief Tan is busy. His wife and best friend Lai have mysteriously disappeared and an undocumented worker is dead. While awaiting their return, Tan and Lai’s daughter, Sandy, develop an unlikely friendship that opens old wounds and examines the nature of love and regret.

Ping Ping is 19 and wants to go to Japan to work in a car parts company. She's under the guardian of her aunt, Madame Tien, who shuffles her between two jobs; working in a pig farm, and cleaning dishes in a rundown restaurant. Tien is also involved in a ‘baby factory’ scheme, pairing young women with migrant workers and then selling the babies for money. Both survive with each other in a love-hate symbiotic manner, until a truth about her aunt is revealed to Ping Ping.

This sounds like the kind of half-brilliant, half-mad kind of film making that rarely happens anymore. It's called 60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero, and it's an omnibus production organized by the city of Talinn, Estonia, featuring the directing talents from around the world. Screening this August in Talinn, the film will be comprised of 60 one-minute silent shorts which will be projected outdoors on a large screen for one showing only.
Because afterwards, the festival organizers will burn the screen and the single existing 35 MM print of the movie.
The current slate of directors includes Mark Boswell, Albert Serra, Mika Taanila, Malcolm Le Grice, Kari Yli-Annala, Ilppo Pohjola, Naomi Kawase, Sogo Ishii, Shinji Aoyama, Joshua and Ben Sadfadie, and Philippe Grandrieux, with more names on the way. 60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero is still accepting submissions from filmmakers on their site.

Set against the backdrop of the violent Memali Incident in 1985, this psychological thriller is about a visiting handyman and his young daughter who experience mysterious visions in a remote village amid the fatal police raid against fundamentalists. The film is produced by Aron Koh’s Lomo Pictures and director Woo’s Greenlight Pictures. Woo’s Stone Turtle premiered in Locarno’s international competition last year where it received the Fipresci prize.
