Throughout the Star Wars films, John Williams has created a complete musical language to describe the characters and essentially tell the story of the saga. Episode III completes the Star Wars story; it also acts as a bridge to the original trilogy. In that way, the film has allowed John to add his own final chapter to the musical lexicon by creating brilliant new themes as well as drawing upon the rich legacy of music he has composed for the five other films over the past three decades. The film chronicles Anakin Skywalker's tragic turn to the dark side accompanied by such aggressively ominous music as Darth Vader's march, the Emperor's theme and a sweeping new piece that underscores the momentous duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan. In the end, the film reminds us that Anakin will eventually be redeemed through the determination and love of his children. John has beautifully captured this spirit of hope by reprising the most memorable music from the original trilogy, the themes of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. The balance of light and dark is central to Star Wars storytelling, and John has conveyed this expertly. His music for Episode III is joyous and adventurous at times, yet pulls us into the mournful and tragic as well. But as the saying goes, the darkest hour is always before the dawn, even the dawn of twin suns on a distant, arid planet.

MAGIC. There's precious little of it in today's world. Most of us re-discovered magic in the pages of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books. As adults, we were transported back to a more innocent time in our lives when we first discovered the promise of a better future and the possibility that good can overcome darkness and evil.
When I began the process of turning "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" into a film, my one goal was to remain true and faithful to the spirit of the book. The meant shooting the entire picture in England, casting all British actors and not straying far from the original text of the novel. It also meant choosing a composer whose music could capture the richness and texture of this complex, imaginative story. I felt there was only one man who could accomplish this. John Williams.
John's music for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" is a towering achievement. It works on several levels. It's a brilliantly constructed companion piece to the film, integrating seamlessly with every image and emotion. It's also a fantastic record, a classical concept album, telling the story of Harry Potter with music. But most importantly, it captures the soul of the Harry Potter world. There is a moment in the book and the film when Harry opens his letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and realizes that he is, in fact, a wizard. At that moment, Harry becomes free to dream. John's music creates the same response in the heart of each listener. It liberates your imagination and gives you the freedom to dream. So put on this record, sit back and dream. Dream of flight. Dream of defeating Dark Lords. Dream of winning a Quidditch match. But most importantly, dream of magic.

Based on the original series of books The Adventures of Tintin by Hergé, the film is produced by Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Kathleen Kennedy and stars Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot,” “Defiance”) as Tintin, the young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig (“Quantum of Solace,” “Defiance”) as the nefarious Red Rackham. Attack of the Clones was an exciting film for me to make because it explores new territory in the world of Star Wars. It was only fitting that the music for the film also explores new ground. The galaxy is becoming a very dangerous place, the Republic is being torn apart, and the Jedi find themselves faced with mysteries and challenges greater than any they have ever known. To complement the complexities of the film's story, John Williams had to create a score that truly expanded the musical palate of Star Wars. As always, he has more than risen to the occasion. His score takes us deep into the urban landscape of Coruscant with rich percussion. He complements the adventures on Geonosis with music that evokes the planet's eerie atmosphere and insect-like population. He heightens the mystery and suspense that drives the first half of the film. And most importantly, he has created a grand love theme, the perfect accompaniment to the developing relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala. Their love is complicated - pure yet forbidden, personal but with profound ramifications for an entire galaxy. Somehow, John has managed to convey all of that complexity in a simple, beautiful hauntingly theme. And that is the genius of John Williams!

[转载]这张动人的精选集,可以说是John Williams与Itzhak Perlman带给电影音乐迷的一个大惊喜,也是电影音乐精选专集首度以这种型式推出,专辑既然名为Serenade(夜曲),音乐风格自然以柔美抒情为诉求,在制作理念上,这张作品俨然是<辛德勒的名单>的延续,Perlman基于<辛德勒的名单>的合作愉快,再次于John Williams的量身打造下,跨越古典音乐领域,为乐迷呈现兼具大众通俗品味,与醇美古典音乐素养的精湛演出,John Williams除了改编个人的若干作品外,也非常不寻常的,亲自改编同侪音乐家的作品,以适切优雅的管弦语言,细腻的烘托Itzhak Perlman扣人心弦的提琴独奏,不仅红花绿叶,相得益彰,也将John Williams自1970年的<屋上提琴手>,个人的小提琴协奏曲,到93年<辛德勒的名单>,历经多年累积与磨练的音乐实力,以精致高雅的品味,呈现给电影音乐的爱好者.
一开场的<紫色姐妹花>,是史匹伯电影中,唯一不是由John Williams出任配乐的作品,不过因为这部电影的制作人Quincy Jones本人即是音乐大老,这部配乐自然由Quincy Jones率领庞大的音乐阵容制作,John Williams也只好让贤了,这部配乐当年虽因配乐者人数太多而与金像乐失之交臂(影艺学院认为这部配乐的作曲者近二十人,平均一个人只需要做十分钟的音乐,无法公正的与其它一人处理整部电影所有音乐需求的音乐家比较),但主题曲与多首插曲都是十分动听的作品,在这张专辑中,John Williams亲自改编这部配乐的Main Title,算是一补他与史匹伯二十多年来,亲密合作关系中的遗珠之憾,而且这首作品改编的相当动人,是这张专辑最迷人的作品之一,John Williams的改编与润色,加上Perlman细腻高雅的音色,甚至超越了当年原声带的演出水准.
Tango曲目Por Una Cabeza也是John Williams亲自改编的作品,这首作品因<女人香>一片而声名大噪,是相当迷人的作品,事实上,除了<女人香>外,这首作品还出现在不少其它的电影中,包括<辛德勒的名单>,可见这首作品应该也是John Williams个人十分喜爱的作品,John Williams在改编的风格上,与一般阿根廷Tango的激情暧昧,情欲纠葛有所不同,呈现较为优雅高贵的华丽美感,至于Perlman的小提琴演出自是不在话下.PaPa , Can You Here Me选自芭芭拉史翠珊自编自导自演的<杨朵>,一部犹太版的<梁祝>,不过故事的重点在于描写传统社会的犹太少女杨朵,为了求学而女扮男装,追求女性自主与两性平等的过程,而不着重于<梁祝>式的凄美情爱,是一部音乐剧型态的电影,不过是我个人很不习惯的那种音乐剧,而Papa Can You Here Me是全剧最美也最著名的一首歌,以我个人而言,也是我觉得唯一好听的歌.坦白说,我个人其实并不习惯Michael Legrand的音乐剧,除了<杨朵>外,这张专辑还选录了其著名的<秋水伊人-The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg>,同样也是一首旋律相当美的作品,同时也是最广为流传的法国电影音乐之一,不过我个人觉得,这部所谓的法国经典音乐剧,看起来简直愚蠢,从头到尾,所有的对话都是用唱的,而且听起来并不像歌,大多数的时候更像在念歌,而且在”演唱对白”时,演员表演的方式其实是很”写实”的,并不是一般我们看歌剧演出的那种感觉,而对我来说,问题或许就是出在,我觉得音乐剧或歌舞片并不是”写实”的东西,现实世界中大家根本就不会用歌唱来对话,但结果这部片子里,所有的运镜和表演方式,肢体动作等,就和一般写实的电影完全相同,关掉声音的话根本看不出来是音乐剧,但偏偏这就是一部从头唱到尾的音乐剧,实在有点莫名奇妙,是我个人看过最无趣的经典名片,不过主题曲I Will Wait For You的确是凄美绝伦的抒情经典.
Il Postino由John Williams改编Luis Bacalov夺下金像奖的作品<邮差>,是这张唱片中我个人最喜爱的一轨演出,Permal与Williams精湛的呈现出这部配乐的细致美感,令人回味无穷.至于Elmer Bernstein近期最具代表性的作品<纯真年代>,在这张专辑中也有凌驾于原声带之上的演出水准,Perlman将一份典雅深情的情怀诠释的淋漓尽致,几乎像是改造了这首作品,也提升了这首作品.
Track 5. Far And Away,John Williams将自己的<远离家园>改编成小提琴演奏曲,效果相当出色,为整张专辑注入一股活泼的律动与活力,也呈现出和原声带大异其趣的音色和感受,Love Theme的演出尤其动人,有比原声带更优美的惊喜演出,相形之下,John Williams另一首个人的作品<新龙凤配>,小提琴改编的效果则不若原来的钢琴演奏曲那般出色,也许是因为这首作品原本就是创作成钢琴演奏的型式,小提琴固然能呈现出不同感受的温润高雅,但比起钢琴演出来,似乎少了点梦幻,晶莹的美感.

一开场的<紫色姐妹花>,是史匹伯电影中,唯一不是由John Williams出任配乐的作品,不过因为这部电影的制作人Quincy Jones本人即是音乐大老,这部配乐自然由Quincy Jones率领庞大的音乐阵容制作,John Williams也只好让贤了,这部配乐当年虽因配乐者人数太多而与金像乐失之交臂(影艺学院认为这部配乐的作曲者近二十人,平均一个人只需要做十分钟的音乐,无法公正的与其它一人处理整部电影所有音乐需求的音乐家比较),但主题曲与多首插曲都是十分动听的作品,在这张专辑中,John Williams亲自改编这部配乐的Main Title,算是一补他与史匹伯二十多年来,亲密合作关系中的遗珠之憾,而且这首作品改编的相当动人,是这张专辑最迷人的作品之一,John Williams的改编与润色,加上Perlman细腻高雅的音色,甚至超越了当年原声带的演出水准.
Tango曲目Por Una Cabeza也是John Williams亲自改编的作品,这首作品因<女人香>一片而声名大噪,是相当迷人的作品,事实上,除了<女人香>外,这首作品还出现在不少其它的电影中,包括<辛德勒的名单>,可见这首作品应该也是John Williams个人十分喜爱的作品,John Williams在改编的风格上,与一般阿根廷Tango的激情暧昧,情欲纠葛有所不同,呈现较为优雅高贵的华丽美感,至于Perlman的小提琴演出自是不在话下.PaPa , Can You Here Me选自芭芭拉史翠珊自编自导自演的<杨朵>,一部犹太版的<梁祝>,不过故事的重点在于描写传统社会的犹太少女杨朵,为了求学而女扮男装,追求女性自主与两性平等的过程,而不着重于<梁祝>式的凄美情爱,是一部音乐剧型态的电影,不过是我个人很不习惯的那种音乐剧,而Papa Can You Here Me是全剧最美也最著名的一首歌,以我个人而言,也是我觉得唯一好听的歌.坦白说,我个人其实并不习惯Michael Legrand的音乐剧,除了<杨朵>外,这张专辑还选录了其著名的<秋水伊人-The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg>,同样也是一首旋律相当美的作品,同时也是最广为流传的法国电影音乐之一,不过我个人觉得,这部所谓的法国经典音乐剧,看起来简直愚蠢,从头到尾,所有的对话都是用唱的,而且听起来并不像歌,大多数的时候更像在念歌,而且在”演唱对白”时,演员表演的方式其实是很”写实”的,并不是一般我们看歌剧演出的那种感觉,而对我来说,问题或许就是出在,我觉得音乐剧或歌舞片并不是”写实”的东西,现实世界中大家根本就不会用歌唱来对话,但结果这部片子里,所有的运镜和表演方式,肢体动作等,就和一般写实的电影完全相同,关掉声音的话根本看不出来是音乐剧,但偏偏这就是一部从头唱到尾的音乐剧,实在有点莫名奇妙,是我个人看过最无趣的经典名片,不过主题曲I Will Wait For You的确是凄美绝伦的抒情经典.
Il Postino由John Williams改编Luis Bacalov夺下金像奖的作品<邮差>,是这张唱片中我个人最喜爱的一轨演出,Permal与Williams精湛的呈现出这部配乐的细致美感,令人回味无穷.至于Elmer Bernstein近期最具代表性的作品<纯真年代>,在这张专辑中也有凌驾于原声带之上的演出水准,Perlman将一份典雅深情的情怀诠释的淋漓尽致,几乎像是改造了这首作品,也提升了这首作品.
Track 5. Far And Away,John Williams将自己的<远离家园>改编成小提琴演奏曲,效果相当出色,为整张专辑注入一股活泼的律动与活力,也呈现出和原声带大异其趣的音色和感受,Love Theme的演出尤其动人,有比原声带更优美的惊喜演出,相形之下,John Williams另一首个人的作品<新龙凤配>,小提琴改编的效果则不若原来的钢琴演奏曲那般出色,也许是因为这首作品原本就是创作成钢琴演奏的型式,小提琴固然能呈现出不同感受的温润高雅,但比起钢琴演出来,似乎少了点梦幻,晶莹的美感.

我记得朱利安˙布林姆吉他大师,两次来台演奏会第一次约二十几年前於台北中山堂演出。当时他凭著手上的两把乐器征服了全场的观眾,这两把乐器,分别是吉他和鲁特琴。而第二次於1993年由财团法人国际新象文教基金会,三月十三日→台北国父纪念馆及三月十一日→台中中山堂举办两场演奏会。他将吉他带进现代音乐厅,重新找到鲁特琴的现代演奏生命,并让巴洛克时代的鲁特琴音乐重现二十世纪。朱利安˙布林姆出生於1933年的伦敦,起初因为父亲的关係而非常喜爱吉他,1945年他正式在伦敦的皇家音乐学院学习钢琴、大提琴及作曲,十三岁首次登台,引起音乐界的瞩目。布林姆曾师事贝伦德与塞哥维亚,但也靠著看录影带及其他演奏家的表演学习吉他。1951年在伦敦举办第一场音乐会,从此展开其忙碌与成功的表演。他的演奏包括巴哈及当代作曲家的作品。他也弹奏鲁特琴,演奏曲目的范畴广泛,在演奏会时常常前半演奏鲁特琴,后半段演奏吉他。

《马友友:双星合璧》这张专辑是继《西藏七年情》之后,著名华裔大提琴演奏家马友友和电影配乐大师约翰威廉姆斯,这两大乐坛巨星的再次合作。专辑收录了约翰威廉姆斯在2002年全新创作的协奏曲,相比起约翰威廉姆斯为世人所熟知的一首首电影原声作品,他的协奏曲作品平时难得一见。
这张专辑是约翰威廉姆斯从2001年底的《哈利波特》电影原声带,到2002年2月发行的《胜利之声:冬季奥运特辑》,以及随后发行的《星球大战前传二》电影原声带等这一波约翰威廉姆斯音乐热潮中,唯一一张特别为马友友所创作的大提琴协奏曲,在这首新作品中,约翰威廉姆斯完成了四个乐章,虽然充满了许多变化与对比,但马友友总能恰如其分将每个音符诠释得入木三分,丝毫没有任何窒碍,足见两人绝佳的默契。

"The Terminal" is a romantic adventure of the human spirit. While Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) may be a man without a country, he is not a man without a score, written with love and sense of Krakhozian humor by maestro John Williams. Viktor's theme is performed by clarinetist, Emily Bernstein, who gives Viktor a clear and profoundly moving voice throughout his journey within the confines of an international terminal while he waits for the visa that could finally get him into New York City and the American dream.
But Viktor is not the only character John has written for. The love theme for Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) may only be eight bars, but it will become instantly memorable after hearing it only once.
There is so much beauty in John's score for "The Terminal". Beauty without bathos. And that's what dignifies Viktor and Amelia's story, always keeping it far from sentimentality but never too far from our hearts. For me this is the "feel good" score of John's entire repertoire, and I am again honored that he has given so freely of his musical gifts to another one of my films.

John composed "Double Trouble" during the production of the film as we decided that a children's choir would be a warm welcome back to Hogwarts. The theme, a melodic mischievous close cousin of the "Hedwig's Theme" composed around text from Shakespeare's "Macbeth", became the foundation stone for the rest of the film score. Its medieval color became the musical identity of the wizarding world in this third installment of Harry Potter.
John juggled these medieval motifs with a late 19th century rossini-esque narrative, a delirious big band Jazz number, and 20th century music (which we both share a love for). How he managed to create a unity out of it all, beats me!
It was a great privilege to witness, as the scoring sessions unfolded, music breathing life into what has become a much better film.
