Avec l'espoir de compter parmi les vainqueurs, l'ancien Empire s'engage aux côtés des Alliés et envoie des centaines de milliers de travailleurs chinois en France et en Russie à partir de 1915 pour accomplir, derrière les lignes, les tâches les plus pénibles.
Dans ce livre, qui confronte pour la première fois des sources et des témoignages chinois, français, anglais et japonais, en partie inédits, l'historienne Li Ma ne se contente pas de raconter l'odyssée mondiale de ces ouvriers. Elle dresse le portrait de la Chine de 14-18, en revenant sur la tumultueuse histoire des décennies précédentes et en éclairant dans le détail ses relations avec les belligérants, en particulier avec le Japon et les États-Unis de Wilson. Elle analyse enfin les conséquences intérieures du conflit jusqu'au traité de Versailles à l'origine du Mouvement du 4 mai 1919 considéré depuis comme l'acte de naissance de la modernité chinoise.

This book offers a sociological analysis as well as a theological discussion of China's internal migration since the marketization reform in 1978. It documents the social and political processes that encompass the experiences of internal migrants from the countryside to the city during China's integration into the global economy. Informed by sociological analysis and narratives of the urban poor, this volume reconstructs the political, economic, social and spiritual dimensions of this urban underclass in China who made up the economic backbone of the Asian superpower.

This book offers a unique historical documentation of the development of the ambitious religious entrepreneurism by leaders of the Early Rain church (and later Western China Presbytery leadership), in an effort to gain social influence in China through local institution-building and global public image management. It unravels the social processes of how this Christian community with a public image of defending religious freedom in China was undermined by an internal loss of moral authority.
Based on publicly available texts from Chinese social media that aren’t readily available in the West as well as in-depth interviews, it is framed by existing scholarship in social theories of the public sphere, charismatic domination in social transition, and the role of power in organizational behaviour. These churches’ stories show how Christianity, which has long been politically marginalized in communist China, has not only adapted and challenged the socio-political status quo, but how it was also ironically shaped by the political culture.
This is an insightful and critical ethnographic study of one of modern China’s most famous house churches. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars of Religion in China as well as those working in Religious Studies, Asian studies, Chinese studies, and Mission Studies more generally.
