The outbreak of the Serbian uprising against the Turks leaves a corrupt local chieftain struggling to find a way to a better life.

Macedonia is a small country, in the heart of the Balkans, which for five centuries was under the yoke of the Ottoman Empire. The action of the film "To the Hilt" takes place in the years of the general collapse and "free fall", after the Macedonian uprising of 1903 which was extinguished in blood. The story is a love quadrangle between an uncompromising idealist rebel, a merciless Turkish officer, an opportunist rich man's son returning home after his studies in Europe and a lucid and open minded European woman, who flirts with the three men and puts in train a series of events with dire consequences, that she could hardly imagine. The film is a harsh and romantic story in which the eternal Macedonian cause for own identity and independence is seen through the prism of relativity of the ideas of freedom, justice, love, sacrifice, and treason.

Based on a comedy TV series about Serbian "aristocracy" during the Turkish "answer" to the Serbian Uprising during the Serbian-Turkish war in the 19th century. With the help of a fortune teller, Karadjordje (the leader of the Uprising) learns that, according to a legend, somewhere in the hills exists a Stone of Wisdom which makes you, if you hit your head against it three times, more wise. So he employs his nephew Crni Gruja, with assistants Ceda Velja and Bole, to find him this miraculous Stone. Crni Gruja finds the Stone and, convinced that he is really becoming more wiser, decides to make some business.

Based on a screenplay by Gordan Mihic (author of Emri Kusturica's "Black Cat, White Cat") and featuring superstars such as Labina Mitewska ("Welcome to Sarajevo") from Macedonia and Nikola Kojo ("Life is a Miracle") from Serbia, the German-Macedonian director Sergej Stanojkovski shot a parable about the current situation in former Yugoslavia. Nemanja leads a normal life with a steady job and a fiancée, until he is waylaid by a sudden downpour in a seedy hotel called The Wheel. After committing a horrible massacre in a village, killing twelve people, the killer shoots himself in the head but unexpectedly survives. Petar, a State Intelligence Agency operative, is attempting to get to the bottom of the case, investigating why the killer said the world "katabaza" before shooting himself – just as Petar's late son had done before committing suicide. Nataša, a psychologist, is assisting Petar with the case but, unlike him, she rationalises everything and does not believe there is anything mysterious at play. Tihon, a monk, warns Nataša that her daughter, Ida, is in danger and that demonic forces that possess human souls are behind everything. After attending a black wedding ritual in the village where the massacre took place, Petar increasingly starts to believe in the involvement of supernatural forces.
