The political drama is set in the Stalin's Soviet Union after the Second World War. A British archaeologist Andrei Miller (Andrews) is working in Iran. He is mistakenly kidnapped and arrested by the KGB. He is falsely accused of spying and wrongfully sentenced to a Gulag prison-camp in Siberia.

One of the three films that comprise Arrival of a Train, a collection of shorts made to celebrate the centenary of cinema. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the film follows Trofim, a Russian peasant jealous of his wife for having an affair with his brother. Trofim kills his brother and runs away to St. Petersburg. Then Trofim steps off the train in St. Petersburg, a cameraman who happens to be shooting on the platform captures his arrival.

本片根据契诃夫的同名短篇小说改编而来，故事发生在某一省城的一所小医院里，其中“第六病房”是监禁精神病患者的特别病房，由一位粗暴、动不动打人的退伍老兵看守，受监禁的病患共五名。其中一个关键性的病人伊凡·德米特利奇·格罗莫夫是个被虐狂，出身良好，之前担任法庭传达员，此人脾气暴躁，言论尖利，他发病的起因系某个秋天早晨目睹两名戴镣铐的犯人被四名士兵押送，忽然神经质的想到自由的丧失，自己也极可能被捕被关监狱...
