Robbe-Grillet nous revient, au meilleur de sa forme, avec une manière de conte fantastique, décoré d’un titre hugolien : Djinn. Que ce djinn-là soit une transcription phonétique du prénom féminin américain Jean, porté par une des figures majeures du récit, c’est une première malice. Elle sera suivie de beaucoup d’autres. Tout est jeu dans ce texte qui ne cesse de se dédoubler, en faisant oublier ce qu’il est pour donner l’illusion parfaite d’autre chose. Ce livre réussit à être, en même temps, une merveilleuse « histoire à dormir debout », aussi étrange qu’un conte d’Hoffmann, aussi souriante qu’une rêverie de Lewis Caroll, aussi rebondissante qu’une aventure de James Bond, et il nous apporte une excellente synthèse de l’univers romanesque de Robbe-Grillet. Tout y est. Ses décors préférés, ses objets fétiches, ses intrigues favorites d’espionnage et ses reprises maniaques des mêmes scènes sous un éclairage différent. Simon Lecoeur, à la recherche d’un emploi, tombe dans les rets d’une mystérieuse Américaine, Jean, qui le subjugue au point qu’il en devient aussitôt amoureux. Sans rien lui expliquer, elle le charge d’une mission qu’un obstacle, apparemment imprévu, la chute d’un enfant sur le pavé disjoint d’une ruelle obscure, l’empêche d’accomplir. Cet accident, parfaitement programmé au contraire, remets Simon entre les mains de deux enfants, Marie et Jean, qui le contraignent à jouer l’aveugle pour découvrir quelle organisation souterraine il sert : c’est une société de lutte contre le machinisme où l’on n’use, par ironie, que de machines et dont tous les agents, découvre-t-on à la fin du récit, après plusieurs variantes, ne sont que des robots. Je pense que Robbe-Grillet n’est jamais allé aussi loin dans ses angoisses. C’est pourquoi Djinn, avec ce titre hanté et ce fil conducteur imposé, me paraît être un de ses ouvrages les plus prenants. The literary friendship between Alain Robbe-Grillet and Roland Barthes lasted 25 years. Everything attests to their deep and mutual intellectual esteem: their private correspondence, their published texts, their conversations - notably in the famous dialogue which gives its name to this work. Robbe-Grillet freely said he had very few true friends but, next to the publisher Jérôme Lindon, he always cited the name of Roland Barthes. In 1980, he wrote his own ‘I love, I don’t love’, published here for the first time, thinking about his friend. In 1985, he predicted: ‘It is his work as a writer which will remain’. Ten years later, in 1995, he imagined him as an impatient, blithe novelist, merrily rewriting - ‘euphorically, with inexhaustible happiness’ - The Sorrows of Young Werther.
This small collection of conversations and short texts by Robbe-Grillet is like the deferred echo of those that Roland Barthes dedicated to him in his Critical Essays in 1964. It offers fresh insight into the development of Robbe-Grillet’s own work as well as that of Barthes, and is a unique testimony to one of the most important literary friendships of our time.
