The Cube, Jim’s program produced as part of NBC’s Experiment in Television series was written by Jim and Jerry Juhl back in 1966. While opposite from the visual style of Jim’s manic short Time Piece, The Cube explored similar themes related to free will and how the mind interprets the surrounding world. There was little interest in the script at first, and Jim and Jerry tried their hand at another script the following year, Tale of Sand, which married the visuals of Time Piece with the ideas of The Cube.

Doc and his dog Sprocket have a hole in their wall, behind which live little furry creatures known as Fraggles in a place called Fraggle Rock. The Rock is also home to the Doozers (who are knee-high to a Fraggle) and the Gorgs (who are giants that think they rule the Rock). One gang of Fraggles (Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober, and Red), under the guidance of the all-knowing Trash Heap (Marjorie), learn about each other and their neighbors and eventually befriend the Doozers, the Gorgs--and even Doc and Sprocket. Dislocation in time, time signatures, time as a philosophical concept, and slavery to time are some of the themes touched upon in this nine-minute, experimental film, which was written, directed, and produced by Jim Henson and starred Jim Henson! Screened for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in May of 1965, Time Piece enjoyed an eighteen-month run at one Manhattan movie theater and was nominated for an Academy Award for outstanding short subject.
