It comes as no surprise that Jewel, an acclaimed American singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter, philanthropist and daughter to an Alaskan cowboy singer-songwriter, finds herself in the embrace of country music for the release of her seventh career album, Perfectly Clear.

Nashville Connections

Jewel's personal odyssey, partly chronicled on one of the best selling debut albums of all time, the twelve-time platinum Pieces of You, comes full circle with her forthcoming country album, Perfectly Clear, the debut release on newly launched Nashville-based independent label The Valory Music Co.

Jewel is set apart her whole career for not only singing, but writing all her songs, and this album is no exception. "I've been writing country songs my whole career; some of the songs on this record date back to when I was 18 years old. I've been hanging on to them until now. They were meant for a record like this one."

The record's first single "Stronger Woman" is a powerful and positive message that resonates with women of any age. Perfectly Clear is produced by Jewel and John Rich of Big and Rich fame. "Jewel is probably one of the greatest American singer-songwriters we have. It is such an honor to work with anyone of that caliber of talent," Rich says. Jewel has spent a lot of time in Nashville over the last few years, and has naturally been drawn to and accepted by the Nashville music community. "If I were discovered today, there is no doubt that I would be signed as a country artist. Songs like "You Were Meant For Me" would have been a country hit today, and not a pop hit as it was in the 90s. The genres have changed more than I feel I have," says Jewel.

As she so repeatedly displays on her new album, This Way, Jewel loves the coffeehouse folk-music mode of sitting around singing 'bout the state of the world, the way Tori Amos loves Bart¢k and Janet Jackson loves dance. "They say that you're only half-alive/Till you give extra whitening a try," Jewel avers in a reference to advertising and toothpaste on "Jesus Loves You," a surging little rock tune that's all loopy commentary and sweet groove.
But out of that often cute and precious folky-poetic tradition, Jewel has delivered recordings - "Foolish Games" from her 1995 debut, Pieces of You, "Hands" and "Barcelona" from 1998's Spirit - that create their own luscious systems of personal observation, worry and hope. The apparent simplicity of folk presents wondrously complex and sexy possibilities for Jewel. She's one of the most richly idiomatic female pop singers of her generation, combining the blazing timbral containment of Karen Carpenter with the rootsy looseness of Bonnie Raitt. With This Way, Jewel continues on - elegant, earthy, engaged.
Unlike Spirit, where producer Patrick Leonard draped her essential folkiness in stylish L.A. keyboard auras, This Way finds Jewel in Nashville, working with producer-guitarist Dann Huff. The music has no particular Nashville characteristic except one: an unwavering concentration on melody and arrangements. Huff adds punch and color - Southern accents and ranging Western backdrops - to the music. Yet the arrangements of songs such as "Standing Still" and "This Way," both of which boast tunes a nation could sing, or the stark romantic ballad "Break Me," are all about Jewel - her voice, her thoughts, her stories.
She truly breaks out twice. On "I Won't Walk Away," Jewel and Huff travel to a Continental soundscape of moody strings and tinkling pianos. "Sometimes," she sings, "the world don't make sense," amid a poignant, magisterially sensible arrangement. But on "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone," all her Seventies rock-chick leanings take flight as Huff and his band pull a Black Crowes. It's there, among "wolf bite" mothers and loser "turtleneck" guys, that she delivers quite a line indeed: "I tried," she sings, "to be unlovable." Jewel has little talent for that.

Jewel is maintaining her country roots as she returns to the format with her sophomore follow-up album, Sweet and Wild. The album, written and produced by Jewel, will be released on June 11th. The first single, "Stay Here Forever," has been embraced by critics and the video is a success on CMT and GAC.
"The theme of this album is finding what's true about you and your life, and defending it and valuing it above all else," said Jewel. "My newest country album will share so many of my personal feelings of love and happiness that I have written into the songs," said Jewel, who married her longtime boyfriend Ty Murray in the summer of 2008. Jewel will also embark on a tour sponsored by Country Financial to support Sweet and Wild.
Also near and dear to Jewel's heart is her charitable initiative, Project Cleanwater, which she continues to support, unwaveringly. Jewel founded Project Clean Water in 1997. Having experienced homelessness as a teenager, Jewel became ill and couldn't afford to buy the bottled water she needed for her sick kidneys. She then realized it was difficult to obtain clean water in the United States, and discovered it was a huge problem globally. She has been relentless in her efforts to bring safe water to those in need and create awareness of clean water shortages around the world.
Project Clean Water has recently partnered with Virgin Unite and the Voss Foundation to create the "Give A Drop" campaign. Donations of $5.00 can be made by texting the message "DROP" to phone number 85944. Money raised through text donations will benefit the partnership, which is currently working in Pel in the Dogon region of Mali, where 40 water retention structures were recently completed. This spring, work will also begin to help rural villages in southeast Ethiopia expand their access to clean water.
Jewel currently lives on a working ranch in Stephenville, Texas with her husband, World Champion bull-riding superstar, Ty Murray.

Jewel is about to deliver her most personal and autobiographical record so far-Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Not content to relegate herself to a traditional music arena, or to be typecast, Jewel has established herself as a culturally significant and relevant brand. Author, songwriter, actress, poet-there are no limits to how Jewel can and will deliver her message. The underlining truth that ties it all together is the integrity of that message.
