Grand Macabre, Le (The Grand Macabre)
György Ligeti. Opera in two acts. 1977.
Libretto by the composer and Michael Meschke, after the play La balade du Grand Macabre (The Ballad of the Grand Macabre) by Michel de Ghelderode.
First performance, in a Swedish version, at the Royal Opera, Stockholm, on 12th April 1978.
Set in an imaginary Breughelland, a country derived from Breughel's paintings, the opera, introduced by a motor-horn prelude, shows a drunken common man, Piet the Pot, and the sinister Grand Macabre, Nekrotzar, who appears to announce the coming end of the world to two lovers, Amanda and Amando, in the first scene. In an embrace he kills Mescalin, who has desired a more energetic sexual partner than her astrologer husband, and accompanies him and Piet to the palace of the young Prince Go- Go, scene of conflicting politicians. Here Nekrotzar himself dies, leaving the other players in the drama seemingly alive.
Ligeti's score is allusive, using music derived from Monteverdi, Verdi and Rossini for the lovers and the Eroica skeleton Prometheus theme in the second act in the palace.
