12 minute short film for 'Broken English' directed by Derek Jarman, comprised of “Witches Song”, “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” and “Broken English”. Part of the “The Dream Machine” vignette (1983).

A lonely glassed shy teenage boy makes several amusing and charming attempts to declare his love for a girl, carrying a bouquet of flowers with him.

Twenty years after the death of Derek Jarman, a heretofore unknown Jarman film comes to light. Found by friend Ron Peck, Jarman shot inside Benjy's, a now closed gay nightclub in east London. The film is shown in it's 78 minute unedited glory, meant to be experimental footage to assist friend Peck for the future filming of Peck's Empire State (1987), and set to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, among others.

The innovative and influential British filmmaker was invited to direct the Pet Shop Boys' 1989 tour and this video is the only collection of the vivid, iconoclastic images he created for the background projections. Stunning, specially shot sequences (featuring actors, the Pet Shop Boys and friends of Jarman) contrast with documentary montagest and images of nature, all skillfully edited to the music tracks.
Also featured are two additional films set to Pet Shop Boys songs: 'Studio Bankside', Jarman's first ever film, and 'A Garden in Luxor', both of which were used at a special benefit oncert by the Pet Shot Boys and Derek Jarman at Manchester's Hacienda nightclub in May 1992.

When Derek Jarman first got interested in making films he started with a super 8 camera and filmed the things around him. This is one of those films and shows the place he lived and worked and many of his friends of the time.

It's interesting that so many of his earlier works were centered on the Butler's Wharf area where he was living at the time. That area has since been redeveloped and is now the domain of trendy galleries and million pound flats.

There is no strong narrative in this piece as with most Jarman works but already we begin to see that Jarman has an eye for capturing interesting images and editing them together in a compelling way.

This film may not be for the casual viewer but it is an interesting example of Jarman's earlier work for those true Jarman fans.

Derek Jarman said that he considered himself a painter more than a film maker and that the camera was just a new kind of brush. This film shows that sentiment. As a narrative film it isn't much, but viewed as a moving still life of a crumbling barn, a beautiful day and and a handsome young man, this film is well worth the time that it takes to view.

The images are very well thought out, the textures and details of the barn and the light of the day are well depicted and the young man is compellingly good-looking.

A lot of Jarman's later style can be seen in this piece.

This film is NOT for everyone but if you are a Jarman fan and are curious about his earlier work, this piece is one of his better early efforts.
