The Portable Frank [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Jim Woodring 出版社: Fantagraphics 2008 - 9
Frank is a unique, visionary comic, exquisitely drawn and so fully realized that adults and children alike find themselves drawn deeply into Woodring's hallucinatory mindscape. The stories, almost entirely wordless, unravel like a good puzzle, rewarding re-reading, providing an experience as immersive as that first love affair, that first samadhi, or that first breath. Simply put, the world of Frank must be experienced to be understood. Frank is an 11-year-old generic anthropomorph who lives in a force-laden landscape called the Unifactor. He is curious but not smart, naive but not noble, and his most outstanding character trait is his ineducability. Along with Pupshaw, Frank's semi-subservient housedog-like godling, the two traipse across their surreal landscape, occasionally encountering Manhog, the bloated bladder of sin with a heart of radiance who exists to thwart their prosperity. And then there's the platonic Jerry Chickens, and the lachrymose Lucky, as well as Frank's Real Pa and Faux Pa, each a part of one of the great cartoon achievements of the 20th century. For all its mystery, the world of Frank is a simple, delightful, mesmerizing example of world-building at its most fanciful, surely to delight parents and children alike.
Weathercraft [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Jim Woodring 出版社: Fantagraphics 2010 - 6
For over 20 years now, Jim Woodring has delighted, touched, and puzzled readers around the world with his lush, wordless tales of "Frank." Weathercraft is Woodring's first full-length graphic novel set in this world-indeed, Woodring's first graphic novel, period -and it features the same hypnotically gorgeous linework and mystical iconography. As it happens, Frank has only a brief supporting appearance in Weathercraft, which actually stars Manhog, Woodring's pathetic, brutish everyman (or everyhog), who had previously made several appearances in "Frank" stories (as well as a stunning solo turn in the short story "Gentlemanhog"). After enduring 32 pages of almost incomprehensible suffering, Manhog embarks upon a transformative journey and attains enlightenment. He wants to go to celestial realms but instead altruistically returns to the unifactor to undo a wrong he has inadvertently brought about: The transformation of the evil politician Whim into a mind-destroying plant-demon who distorts and enslaves Frank and his friends. The new and metaphysically expanded Manhog sets out for a final battle with Whim... Weathercraft also co-stars Frank's cast of beloved supporting characters, including Frank's Faux Pa and the diminutive, mailbox-like Pupshaw and Pushpaw; it is both a fully independent story that is a great introduction to Woodring's world, and a sublime addition to, and extension of, the Frank stories. Weathercraft will be a defining graphic novel of 2010.
Congress of the Animals [图书] 豆瓣
Congreso de Animales
作者: Jim Woodring 出版社: Fantagraphics 2011 - 6
The first full-length “Frank” graphic novel! Readers of the “Frank” stories know that The Unifactor is in control of everything that happens to the characters that abide there, and that however extreme the experiences they undergo may be, in the end nothing really changes. That goes treble for Frank himself, who is kept in a state of total ineducability by the unseen forces of that haunted realm. And so the question arises: what would happen if Frank were to leave The Unifactor?
That question is answered in Congress of the Animals, Jim Woodring's much-anticipated second full-length graphic novel, and first starring his signature character Frank. In this gripping saga an act of casual rudeness sets into motion a chain of events which propels Frank into a world where he is on his own at last; and like so many who leave home, Frank finds himself contending with realities of which he had no previous inkling.
In Congress of the Animals we are treated to the pitiful spectacle of Frank losing his house, taking a factory job, falling in with bad company, fleeing the results of sabotage, escaping the Unifactor in an amusement park ride, surviving a catastrophe at sea, traveling across hostile terrain toward a massive temple seemingly built in his image, being treated roughly by gut-faced men and intervening in an age-old battle in a meadow slathered in black and yellow blood. And when he finally knocks on opportunity's door he finds... he finds...
Suffice to say he finds what most of us would like to find. Can he bring it back with him? Will the Unifactor accept him as he has become? Are his sins forgiven? Is love real? Is this the end of Frank as we know him? 104 pages of black-and-white comics
Frank in the 3rd Dimension [图书] 谷歌图书
作者: Jim Woodring 出版社: Fantagraphics Books 2015
Frank in the 3rd Dimension is a series of Jim Woodring's loveliest pictures -- 32 anecdotal visual vignettes, dioramas, moments pickled in time -- as you've never seen Frank before: in 3-D, about as real as you can get him outside of an Ionescoian theatrical performance (which could be next -- watch your local theater listings). Frank and Frank's world are already hallucinatory, but seeing him in the most technologically advanced and artistically crafted 3-D ever produced--more than 150 layers per drawing in order to round and "sculpt" each image into full, volumetric 3-D -- is an experience that has to be savored to be believed.
