Drawing: the motive force of architecture

Drawing: the motive force of architecture
Drawing [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Peter Cook 出版社: John Wiley & Sons 2008 - 6
Focusing on the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture, Drawings highlights the work of key contemporary figures who have, through their drawn work, affected the course of architectural thinking. Bringing this together is a chapter–by–chapter series of essays that broadly charts the forward movement and expansion of drawing iconography, techniques and methodologies. Thus it will move from such conditions as Victorian romanticism; Modernist heroics, Minimalism, Diagrams, the representation (and inspiration) of movement, technology and motive power; through to notions and examples of digital automatism. In this way, the advent and challenge of computer–based drawing vis–à–vis ‘sketching’ or technique based drawing will be argued as a natural progression rather than a radical explosion. In particular, there are many examples of hand–in–hand development of a project using several techniques. Also includes drawings by Sverre Fehn, Mark Goulthorpe, Zaha Hadid, Ron Herron, Tom Kovak, Enric Miralles, Marcus Novak , Cedric Price, Wolf Prix, and Lebbeus Woods.

The City, Seen as a Garden of Ideas [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Peter Cook 出版社: Monacelli 2004 - 1
Peter Cook is a founder of Archigram, a collective of six architects known for architecture through drawing. "The City, Seen as a Garden of Ideas" is a survey of Cook's career-long project to reinvigorate the city. A series of mediations on contemporary urban conditions in cities as diverse as Tokyo, Edinburgh, and Santa Monica, this volume also functions as an informal memoir, at once lyrical and trenchant, in which Cook reveals the influences and motivations behind his seminal works and recent projects. A collection of projects and texts created especially for the monograph completes this compelling presentation.

D3 Start to Finish teaches you how to build a custom, interactive and beautiful data visualisation using the JavaScript library D3.js (versions 6 and 7).The book covers D3 concepts such as selections, joins, requests, scale functions, event handling and transitions. It also covers general web development techniques such as state management and modularisation. In other words, everything you need to know to build a real world, custom data visualisation. You'll also learn how to put these concepts into practice by building an interactive data visualisation called Energy Explorer. This is a custom data visualisation that visualises the energy mix of 141 countries. There are 15 separate build steps and you're taken through each step in detail. There's also a code download link for all 15 steps so you can follow along. Some of the topics covered are:- requesting CSV data using D3- D3 data joins (including joining nested data)- architecting a data visualisation using a layout function- detailed styling using CSS- adding a popup using Flourish's popup library- state management- animations using D3 transitions- data manipulation using Lodash- adding a menu, legend and footer
About the authorPeter Cook has built data visualisations for Carbon Tracker, London Datastore and McGraw Hill Education. He currently works as a senior visualisation developer at Flourish and also writes about the how-to of data visualisation for Create With Data. He's run training courses for clients such as the BBC and The Economist and written data visualisation tutorials for Flowing Data and Creative Bloq. He created D3 in Depth and Create With Data.
Reviews"One of the best D3 books I've read. The contents are very clear, it is easy to follow and the concepts are very solid."- Javier García Fernández (Journalist & developer)
"Teaching D3 is hard and it's been very useful to have a resource like Peter's D3 in Depth website to send students to. With this book Peter delivers something rather more substantial - a non-trivial D3 visualisation built from the ground up. You get the hard earned pro-tips and perspectives delivered in a realistic context - pretty much the gold standard for learning."- Kyran Dale (author of Data Visualization with Python and JavaScript (O'Reilly))
"I’d very much recommend this book to anyone who needs to rapidly get up to speed with D3, whether they are an experienced developer or a relative novice. It will give you all the tools and knowledge to create professional grade visualisations."- Mike Hadlow (Developer & blogger)

With his visionary ideas and fantastical, imaginative, and colorful drawings, British architect Peter Cook has profoundly influenced and helped shape architecture and architectural thinking for almost six decades.00Since the 1960s, British avant-garde architect and professor Sir Peter Cook (b. 1936) have used drawing as the primary medium to express his alternative and often fantastical ideas and visions.00Cook has seen but a relatively small number of his buildings actually erected ? including the Kunsthaus Graz in Austria, inaugurated in 2003 and quickly nicknamed ?the friendly alien.? However, it is first and foremost the theoretical field of architecture that has been of interest to him: the question of what architecture can and must do and thus also the potential that lies in what Cook himself describes as the architect?s most important tool, namely drawing.00Exhibition: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark (21.01. - 08.05.2022).
