According to "Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (29 January 1860 – 15 July 1904) was a Russian short-story writer, playwright and physician, considered to be one of the greatest short-story writers in the history of world literature. His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov practiced as a doctor throughout most of his literary "Medicine is my lawful wife", he once said, "and literature is my mistress."

Altıncı Koğuş, Russkaya Mısl dergisinin 1892 kasım sayısında yayımlandığında büyük ilgi görmüştü. Hatta Lenin’in de yapıtı okuduktan sonra dehşete kapıldığı, “Kendimi Alıncı Koğuş’a kapatılmış gibi hissettim” dediği rivayet edilir.

Vişne Bahçesi ülkede değişen toplumsal, politik ve ekonomik düzenin gerçekliğiyle yüzleşemeyen aristokrat bir ailenin dokunaklı portresidir. İçinde büyük bir vişne bahçesinin bulunduğu aile çiftliğinin borçlar nedeniyle satılması söz konusudur. Çiftlik sahiplerinin çocukluk anılarıyla birlikte, vişne bahçeleri de geçmişte kalmıştır artık. Yeni düzen karşısında kararlı davranıp mülklerini ellerinde tutmaktan acizdirler.

Vişne Bahçesi, 1904 yılında Moskova Sanat Tiyatrosu'nda Stanislavski tarafından sahneye kondu. Çehov yapıtının "komedi, hatta yer yer fars" olduğunu vurgulasa da, Stanislavski oyunu "trajedi" olarak ele almakta ısrar etmişti. Stanislavski o güne dek aşırı duygusal olan Rus tiyatrosuna doğal ve gösterişten uzak bir anlatım getirmesiyle ünlenmiş olsa da, Çehov'un kendi oyunları için istediği yalınlığı ve doğallığı yakalayamamıştı.

Twenty translations have been selected from the published work of such master translators as Patrick Miles and Harvey Pitcher, Ann Dunnigan, and Ronald Hingley. Seven additional translations are by Constance Garnett, substantially revised by Cathy Popkin. All stories are annotated to clarify unfamiliar material and to point out differences in the translators’ strategies.

"Life and Letters" includes a rich selection of Chekhov’s letters, some in English for the first time, some with previously redacted passages restored, as well as Aileen Kelly’s portrait of Chekhov.

“Criticism” explores the wide range of approaches and interpretations in two sections. “Approaches” juxtaposes five different perspectives on how to read Chekhov, represented by Peter Bitsilli, Alexander Chudakov, Robert Louis Jackson, Vladimir Kataev, and Radislav Lapushin. “Interpretations” contains ten divergent readings of stories in this edition. At a time when the Russian theatre was dominated by formulaic melodramas and farces, Chekhov created a new sort of drama that laid bare the everyday lives, loves and yearnings of ordinary people. Ivanov depicts a man stifled by inactivity and lost idealism, and The Seagull contrasts a young man's selfish romanticism with the stoicism of a woman cruelly abandoned by her lover. With 'the scenes from country life' of Uncle Vanya, his first fully mature play, Chekhov developed his own unique dramatic world, neither tragedy nor comedy.
