《纸飞鸟》以上世纪三十年代的西班牙为背景，讲述西班牙内战爆发后社会陷入混乱，喜剧演员Jorge与Enrique收养了孤儿Miguel，一起跟随着剧团四处漂泊，目睹着各种战争带来的惨象，而让他们更不自在的是，他们到处遭受着监视与怀疑……虽然影片没有正面的描写战场上的生死决战，但借助于三位主人公的四处漂泊及遭遇带出了战争的无所不在，有如幽灵般随形，如Jorge在医院里探访Miguel的母亲那一幕，扮演母亲的女演员的一句台词与近乎麻木的表情在无言的抗议着战争带来的痛楚；而影片里三位主角主要是从事喜剧表演，也加强了对战争的控诉。最后那一段，老年的Miguel重返西班牙的一家戏院演唱，昔日的时空交错进如今的镜头里，让人唏嘘。
