在影视传奇之前，Will Smith就是以饶舌歌手的身分闯荡银河：16岁时他巧遇音乐品味相同的Jeff Townes，两人组成DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince，化名Fresh Prince的他担任MC，开始在当地表演；清爽的乐风、流畅的旋律在当时一片弥漫着街头写实的饶舌中独树一格。’88年的「He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper」正式打入主流市场，也成为嘻哈乐第一张达到双白金销售纪录的唱片；其中“Parents Just Don‘t Understand”一曲更为他们赢得第一座葛莱美奖。

Will Smith wisely decided not to change his style too much on Big Willie Style, the first record he released since becoming a major movie star with appearances on Independence Day and Men in Black. Instead of trying to toughen his image, Smith continued with the friendly, humorous pop-rap that has been his trademark since He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper. Of course, he gives the music a glossy modern sheen (ironically based on early-'80s funk) in order to prove that he's still hip, and it works. Sure, there's filler scattered all the way the through the album, but the best moments - the disco-thumping "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," the Larry Blackmon duet "Candy," the ballad "I Loved You," and the riotous "Men in Black" - rank among his best singles.

Even though his last CD, Willennium, failed to sell as well as 1997´s Big Willie Style, Smith´s G-rated ladies (and family) man persona is infectious, even when he´s coasting a bit on his well-earned rep. Such is the case on this exuberant but somewhat pedestrian CD. Smith gives it his all on cuts like the hip-shaking "Block Party" and the jittery "Gotta Go Home," but the slickly produced tales of good times and wicked women are way too familiar. Luckily, Smith stretches a bit with the heavy dose of R&B delivered by his vocal protégé Tra-Knox and on the rock-injected single (and promo tool for the film Men in Black II) "Black Suits Comin´ (Nod Ya Head)." The stinging guitars give Smith an excuse to strut, and the ensuing bravado gives him an edge he often lacks.

Will Smith is the future of hip-hop--in the sense that Willennium, his follow-up to 1997´s multiplatinum Big Willie Style, is sure to dominate pop-rap airwaves and sales in the months after its release. Proud of his kid appeal but also self-mocking (he carries the title concept further with the single "Will2K," a party jam built on a sample of the Clash´s "Rock the Casbah"), Smith celebrates the early-rap values of good-natured boasting and fun-fun-fun. This megastar´s desire to remain part of the community is reflected in his savvy choice of guests, who number everyone from K-Ci to rappers new school (Lil´ Kim, Eve) and old (Slick Rick, Biz Markie); once and future partner DJ Jazzy Jeff even gets his own four minutes of funk on the scratch-happy "Pump Me Up." Smith also attempts cinematic--natch--storytelling on "Afro Angel" and "The Rain," which are admirably solemn if far from the best things here. Smith may not be the hippest hip-hopper around, but as Chuck D once said of another, very different figure, "Don´t tell me that you understand until you hear the man."
