貝多芬一生總共寫了七首鋼琴三重奏，本集收錄其中的兩首，包含第三號，作品1-3，以及第5號，作品70-1「幽靈」。本輯中兩首作品，分別錄製於1958與61年，分別於德國波昂的貝多芬故居，以及卡薩爾斯親手創立普拉德音樂節錄製。當時卡薩爾斯已近85高齡，但其藝術性與技巧性依舊令人折服，並與霍佐夫斯基、聖多．維及殷格爾等好友，共同營造親密的音樂氛圍，樹立室內樂演奏的最高標準以及鑑賞的最高境界。儘管是五十多年前的錄音，如今聽來依舊令人動容。

With the works from Bach the Catalan cello player had a special relationship, from his earliest youth on he was surrounded by this music, and of course he was learning piano with the fugues and preludes of the well-temepered clavier... Twelve years he worked on the Suites for Cello solo, before he dared playing them in a public concert (as first musician in general!).

Pablo Casals made his first recordings in 1915 (a series for Columbia), it would not be until 1926 that he again released a recording (on the Victor label).
In 1905 he moved to Paris where with the pianist Alfred Cortot and violinist Jacques Thibaud he established the famous trio which would last until 1934. The trio recorded Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann in versions which, even today, are regarded as touchstones of greatness. He also recorded cello sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms as well as the cello concertos by Dvoøák and Elgar together with Bruch's Kol Nidrei.
Arguably his greatest recording was made by himself alone: In three periods during the years 1936, 1938 and 1939 he committed to disc the six suites by Bach featured on this disc.
Besides being a master of the cello he was a conductor and created an orchestra in his native Catalonia - Orquesta Pau Casals, Barcelona - indeed Cortot conducted it when Thibaud and Casals were the soloists in the recording of the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello and orchestra.
