Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite has been acclaimed as 'one of the most talented and intriguing choreographers working today' (New York Times). Flight Pattern, created in 2017, is her first work for The Royal Ballet. Critically acclaimed at its premiere, Flight Pattern is a poignant response to one of the biggest humanitarian crises facing current society.

This large-scale ensemble work, which takes a powerful and sombre look at the ongoing refugee crisis, is set to music from Górecki's 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs'. Górecki's music, often associated with the Holocaust, explores themes of motherhood and the separation of families. Pite gives these themes new meaning in a work that moves from the big picture of displaced communities to focus on the emotions of individuals: the large ensemble cast moves as one body, packed together in tight rows, until one distraught couple are marked out from the crowd through a poignant pas de deux.

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Crystal Pite and actor-playwright Jonathon Young join forces to examine the aftermath of Young’s personal tragedy, exploring what happens to a person after experiencing the all-too imaginable, and creating an “inspiring dance theatre hybrid” (The Observer) stark with unflinching honesty.

Choreographed to the rhythm of Young’s words, the trauma of loss and the long road to recovery are uncovered through comedy and drama, poetry and movement.

This is a rare opportunity to join Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 1) in a UK premiere of their latest mind-bending works.

Figures in Extinction [1.0]

We are living in an age of extinction: of animals, of language, of our connection with nature and of age-old ways of knowing. Can we ever hope to give a name to what we are losing? What does it mean to bear witness to a violence in which we are both perpetrators and victims?

Across continents, choreographer Crystal Pite and director Simon McBurney reflect on their fears and cautious hopes for the age we are living in. In a major new collaboration from NDT and Complicité these world-renowned artists work together, drawing on a rich array of materials such as the sound of icecaps melting, tree roots growing, and the protests of climate change deniers.

Gods and Dogs

Gods and Dogs is the 100th choreography Jiří Kylián created for NDT. This mysterious ballet by the master choreographer visualizes the fine line between normality and abnormality. Or as he puts it: “Surely no positive developments can ever be accomplished without the help of a healthy portion of madness.” Gods and Dogs is called ‘an unfinished work’, referring to Kylián’s fascination for the beauty of what is left incomplete in life.

La Ruta

On a dark, fog-shrouded stage, a street is at once a motorway, a lonely village lane and a forest path. Space and time are suspended and it is up to you to create your own connections. Argentinian choreographer Gabriela Carrizo combines modern dance with acrobatics and slapstick in La Ruta.

With her unusual, experimental style, Carrizo takes us into a parallel dream world that you can interpret into your own never-ending story. Be warned; she doesn’t let you go so easily.

Jonathon Young and Crystal Pite revise an archetypal comic plot to serve as the basis for choreography in a true hybrid of contemporary theatre and dance. In Revisor, eight Kidd Pivot dancers embody the recorded dialogue of some of Canada’s finest actors, exploring conflict, comedy and corruption in the potent relationship between language and the body.
