一开始罪恶之城的故事只有13话完，剧情简单得不能再简单：一个典型的硬汉警察马弗跟一个妓女过夜之后，被冤枉杀了那个妓女。这桥段并不新鲜，而马弗的行动更加不算新鲜：找出冤枉自己的那个人。不过这可不是为自己复仇，而是为了那个死去的妓女。马弗是粗人一个，他的调查方式理所当然的只有一种。 一个死翘翘的妓女，值得你为之送命吗？值得去死。值得去杀人。值得下地狱。 拳头、鲜血、女人，刀锋与子弹。什么叫暴力美学，这才是暴力美学。不是在房间里面放鸽子，而是一枪把你丫暴头，然后走了出去，不再回头。
米勒虽然曾经做过电影编剧，但是他因为不满好莱坞对他的《机械战警》剧本的删改，一怒之下声称绝不再和好莱坞合作，所以当初创作《罪恶之城》的时候，故意把它画成一部“反电影”的漫画：《罪恶之城》的线条粗犷刚硬，不拘一格，有时候画格本身就是故事的一部分。黑白分明的画风，高光勾勒出人物的轮廓，留白叙述着千言万语。好像这个世界一点中间色都没有，只有黑和白，罪与罚，杀人或被杀。老米强迫读者的目光集中在他最强的笔触上，在一个充满暴力的黑白世界里追寻他的哲学。
画完这个故事，米勒当然不会善罢甘休，又接着画了好几部续集：
《平安夜》（SILENT NIGHT）还是马弗的故事，讲他寻找一个被绑架的小女孩。这故事不长，二十来页，强的是全篇几乎没有对白——虽然这在漫画界算不上特别希奇，然而这可是老美啊，出了名的喜欢白话的啊，他的漫画中总是充满了独白，人物几乎每分钟都在喃喃自语；这篇漫画对他来说倒是一种新的尝试。
到了《A DAME TO KILL FOR》，影片里有份的Dwight就登场啦，这哥们够衰的，专门吃女人的亏，被前一个女人耍得团团转还挨了枪子儿，不过这人有不死系的小强潜质，居然活下来了。而且不仅活下来，还在前女友Gail和女忍者Miho的帮助下恢复了。然后当然是报仇。不过这不算重要，重要的是出现在这个故事中的Miho。她和Dwight再次出现在接下来的《FAMILY VALUES》中，这次米勒更是尽情的挥洒，通栏白描和那些版画式的画格形成对比，光影对比比平时更加夸张N倍，大片大片的黑白色块，只能用淋漓尽致来形容。
尽管这个系列是黑白漫画，但偶尔也会使用颜色（比如《THAT YELLOW BASTARD》）——相信很多人都记得辛德勒名单里那个红衣小罗莉，一个作用——不过凡事都有例外。《TO HELL AND BACK》里就有这么一段场景：
故事讲的是一个叫Wallace的老兵，为了一个想自杀的女人惹上了N多麻烦（罪恶城市里女人就是不折不扣的祸水呀）。故事本身没啥好说，值得一提的是其中拿整整一话来讲Wallace的幻觉——全彩！因为是药物造成的梦境，所以这一话中的视象一点逻辑没有，从日本武士到蓝博，甚至还有美国队长和神奇女侠……等到一切归于现实，世界又重新变成黑白，又回到了那个封闭的罪恶之城。
暴力、凌虐、绝望、歧视、迫害，在这个封闭的系统之中，一切都是允许的，只有善良除外。这是一个没有希望，没有尊严，也没有信仰的世界，也没有一条路可以逃离。Hartigan为了南茜而自杀，这并不表示南茜就获得了解救，她最后很可能依然逃不脱被强奸、被凌辱的命运；人们无法抗拒，只能保持生存，直到最糟的结局到来。
