《厄舍古屋的倒塌》是爱伦坡最着名的心理恐怖小说之一。主人公罗得瑞克的性格，他与妹妹玛德琳的关系，以及他活埋妹妹的动机一直是人们关注的焦点。小说全篇贯穿了大量的意识流描写，堪称心理小说中的精品。
罗德里克与年轻的妻子玛德莱娜生活在厄舍家族的古厦里，一位医生经常来这里看望体弱多病的玛德莱娜。如同厄舍家族的所有男人，罗德里克充满激情地为妻子画肖像。在这个过程中，玛德莱娜的健康每况愈下，好像她的灵魂逐渐转移到了肖像上。随着肖像的完成，玛德莱娜停止了呼吸。深深地爱着妻子的罗德里克相信妻子只是睡着了，拒绝将她埋葬，而是在孤独中等待她的归来。一个电闪雷鸣的夜晚，他终于看到妻子活着回到了自己身边。然后，他们一起飞向天空，看到身下的厄舍古厦在雷击引起的大火中化为灰烬。
本片取材于美国着名小说家爱伦·坡的同名短篇小说，并且参照了他的其他两个短篇小说。坡的小说可以分为恐怖小说和推理小说两大类，《厄舍古厦的倒塌》属于前者。坡自称他的小说的特点在于“把滑稽提高到怪诞，把害怕发展到恐惧，把机智扩大成嘲弄，把奇特变化为怪异和神秘”。影片《厄舍古厦的倒塌》通过非常的摄影角度、特写镜头、画面迭印、镜头移动等艺术技巧，较好地传达了原着的恐怖和神秘气氛。影片发行后虽然获得评论界的好评，但是未能取得令人满意的票房。值得提及的是，路易斯·布努艾尔以助理的身份参加了这部影片的创作。本片导演让·爱普斯坦（1897—1953）是法国20年代印象派电影的重要代表人物之一，起初从事电影理论研究和影评写作，20年代初开始导演生涯，一生中创作过约30部影片。1924年，法国的印象派电影随着其创始人路易·德吕克的去世而宣告结束，爱普斯坦转而拍摄先锋派的新影片。萨杜尔语说，受表现主义影响，爱普斯坦拍摄的先锋派电影“专供那些光顾专门性的电影院的有高等文化修养的人士观看”。

法国电影导演。先锋派电影的代表人物之一。1897年 3月25日生于华沙，1953年卒于巴黎。爱浦斯坦原是散文作家和哲学家，曾在L.德吕克主办的电影杂志上发表文章热情称颂“第七艺术”。1922年，他首次执导了《巴斯德传》。次年，执导了根据巴尔扎克小说改编的《红色旅店》以及《忠实的心》。这些影片在蒙太奇手法的应用上十分精彩，获得了巨大成功。爱浦斯坦成为先锋时期印象主义学派的重要人物。此后爱浦斯坦开始拍摄了一些商业影片。但是他从未完全抛弃对电影艺术的探索：1927年他导演了《┩$×11》、 《三面镜》，次年导演了《于谢家的没落》，其中仍使人感受到先锋派风格。
爱浦斯坦此后转向纪录片，他试图表现真实生活中的奇观壮景。1929年执导了《最后的土地》，次年执导了《乌鸦海》。1948年，他完成了最后一部短片《海之火》。

《三面镜》堪称印象派运动最大胆影片之一，爱普斯坦为影片设置了晦涩暗昧而又诡异多变的情节。三个迥异的女人各自描述他们与同一个男人的关系，他们的叙述使得关于这个男人的看法互相矛盾冲突，无法统一。在电影的最后一场戏中，在分别给每个女人写信叙述不能与他们见面的不同理由之后，他遭遇了一次致命的车祸。影片中几乎所有的叙事信息，都是通过三个女人的感知而透露出来的，我们对这个男人的直接感知非常得少。影片最后有一个象征性的镜头，是这个男子处在三面镜子的前面，这暗示着我们根本无从把握任何有关他的所谓真实。在默片时代，很少有叙事电影如本片一样与古典的故事讲述惯例彻底分开的。《三面镜》在手法上的创新倾向后来又在欧洲五六十年代的艺术电影中重新出现。

Programming diverse films at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles, and making the films in his personal archive available for commercial distribution, he helped preserve and promote avant-garde cinema.
This two-DVD collection assembles some of the most influential and eclectic short films in the Rohauer Collection, including works by Man Ray, Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp, Watson & Webber, Fernand Léger, Joris Ivens, Dimitri Kirsanoff, Jean Epstein, and Orson Welles.

Bargeman Louveau finds an abandoned boy, Victor, and with the authorities permission takes him back to his own family where he raises him. 10 years later Victor and Louveau's daughter Clara have fallen in love, and it is then that Louveau is called to Paris, where it has been discovered that Victor is really the son of Maugendré, a charcoal shipper on the Nivernaise canal. Meanwhile, Victor protects Clara when a jealous bargehand attacks her and he manages to save the family barge from crashing into the lock. Returned to his real father, Victor is sent away to be educated but misses Clara and his life on the barges. When Maugendré realizes this he lets him return and when they are married he gives Victor and Clara a barge of their own.

The almost financially ruined French gentleman Gaston Dewalter spends several days in Biarritz before going off in the Hispano-Suiza, a luxe car which was a present from his friends. George becomes the lover of Lady Stéphane Oswill pretending he is wealthy. Then Stéphane spends the remaining funds with which the now desperate George hoped to rebuild his fortune in Senegal.
