HOOPTOBER ONE NIGHT THREE: + 2022 PODCAST MACABRE HORROR CHALLENGE #47: 2010s THAT YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE Kind of wrote this series off for a long time due to the excessive sequelization, but really enjoy Wan's approach to this stuff. I'm aware of the real life Warrens' reputation as paranormal hucksters, but it kind of adds a whole other dimension to Wilson and Farmiga's weirdly low-key performances. Even knowing that the reality of the film supports the Warrens' assertion that all of this is real, at first there's something about how casually they react to it all that makes you wonder if they're underplaying their own belief, or if it's all part of some convoluted hustle. But Wan gives the ridiculousness of the third act just enough of an emotional hook that you believe it all too.
