2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 32: J-Horror Week I appreciated the constrast between the quasi-realistic historical drama aspects and the genuinely freaky theatrical staging and effects for the more supernatural elements. I think I'm going to have to revisit this one sometime soon so I can pay closer attention to how Shindō repeats and iterates the story elements as he goes, which felt very authentic to the rhythms of classic folktales.
