A great adaptation of a great story. Frank Darabont's third Stephen King movie follows the events of the novella well, with only a few deviations here and there. Honestly, the biggest change is the new ending and it's even better than what King had envisioned in the source material. It's got your standard end of the world style plot elements, such as dissension in the group and factions forming. It's as much about the monsters in the mist itself as it is about the monster inside all of us. The one that creeps out when we're afraid and lost. It takes over our rational mind and makes us dangerous to ourselves and others. When things break down the natural human response is to cling to whatever promises comfort and hope. It's the inner workings of the human psyche that bring the real horror here. That's not to say the monster stuff isn't just as entertaining though. Their appearances are wonderfully imaginative and grotesque. Darabont isn't afraid to let things get gory. This side of things is only lessened by some rather cheap looking visuals. Something that plagues the entire film. It's something that's easily overcome though thanks to the strong writing and excellent performances by the cast. It's a creature-feature that has more to offer than blood. Watching the deterioration of the other survivors mental states adds some depth to the experience. While previous outings involving Darabont's takes on Stephen King's stories have focused on more human drama, his first attempt at a more traditional King horror story shows that he still handles the writer's material very well.
