MANNVANUARY DEUX, #2 + 2023 Criterion Challenge Category 37: Crime The first of two Michael Manns I have planned for MannVanuary (no relation). Just a gorgeous looking and sounding film, between the perfect neo-noir compositions of cinematographer Donald E. Thorin and the perfect neo-noir compositions of Tangerine Dream. The pacing and rhythm are perfect, bouncing us from wordless montages of Caan and company working their craft, to dense exchanges of dialogue written in hardboiled crime argot that's understandable purely based on delivery. Mann draws compelling parallels between the promises of the American Dream and those of the "one last big score" mentality, which are both shown to be exploitative shams in service to rich assholes.
