a review of 特罗马之战

2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 50: TROMA WEEK Starts out as kind of a weird proto-LOST (complete with a plane crash, a pretty-boy rock star with something to prove, and a mom who can't stop screaming about her missing baby) and eventually turns into an extremely kooky (and by turns semi-tasteless) riff on the '80s obsession with re-fighting the Vietnam war. The humor is pretty much on the same MAD Magazine level as Troma's other movies, including some pretty puerile gags about AIDS and such. I will say that the staging of the battle scenes is pretty impressive for a low-budget production, and there's a LOT of them. I'd wager that at least half of the running time is devoted to one of the two big open-warfare setpieces, which are well-directed and choreographed with the actors displaying a surprising amount of competency with actual firearms. At times, it feels excessive but it feels like a real choice by Kaufman & Herz to luxuriate in as much spectacle as Troma's productions can afford.
