a review of 金刚：骷髅岛

#81 (March 22/31) I had some genuine hopes for this movie, that maybe we'd get a stripped-down action film of the Kong story that avoided the epic-length extremes of the Jackson remake while also setting up a compelling mythology for the forthcoming Godzilla/Kong kaijuverse that Legendary is attempting to bring together. And parts of this do work, but there's an equal amount that just seems unnecessary. There's about six more characters in this movie than there needed to be, and it was honestly exhausting trying to keep track of whose story I was supposed to care about, while Kong is mainly used as a plot device.
