1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 29: Made in Spain Both wackier and somehow more disturbing than I had been led to believe from the controversy that erupted around it during its initial release. The actual sexual content feels fairly tame now, but the way the film depicts Banderas basically wearing Victoria Abril's character down by kidnapping and imprisoning her seems far more sketchy. On one hand, I can see the satirical side of the whole thing as a spoof of screwball romantic comedies, but on the other hand I wasn't entirely clear on what Almodovar was trying to say about either the genre or gender politics. I'll chalk this one up as one to rewatch later after I've viewed more Almodovar films.
