I'm always confused when I stumble across a solid little B-movie like this and see that it's universally hated. Don't get me wrong, I expect that kind of thing from professional critics and the hardcore wannabes out there because slamming productions of this ilk is how they trick people into thinking they have superior film taste, but the average viewer? It makes no sense. Seriously let's get real for a minute, what did you expect going into this? Because I was anticipating the same mix of blood, boobs, and people getting eaten by rubber fish that I got from its predecessor that the same people who hate on this weirdly celebrate. It's not a step back in that regard. What, has this just been getting attacked over the years by James Cameron fan bros because it's not the next Avatar or Terminator? If anything, I'd say it's an improvement over Joe Dante's prior effort. The characters and their conflict are far more interesting, Cameron's well-documented fascination with the ocean led to a lot of underwater filming which is great as witnessing the cast swim around in the piranha's habitat fits the material much better than watching them float on a makeshift raft on top of it, and while undeniably goofy the titular creatures' new flight mutation allows more of the action to take place where you can actually see it. Heck, it's even got what is easily my personal favorite nudity in the entire series, remakes/reboots included. Thematically, it's the same moral about governing bodies willfully neglecting the public's safety for profit which was already stolen from Jaws, but the familiarity of that setup isn't necessarily a problem due to such a thing still being an unfortunate reality. So yeah, the negativity puzzles me. If this were an Asylum mockbuster or something then I would understand it as those never deliver the cheap, basic thrills promised, but this has everything you would expect! If that means it just isn't your kind of movie, then quite simply you shouldn't have been watching it in the first place. It made no effort to hide what it is, James Cameron's name on it or not!
