a review of 死人之城

HOOPTOBER NINE! NIGHT THIRTY-ONE! + 2022 PODCAST MACABRE HORROR CHALLENGE CATEGORY 22: 1960S HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE A fantastic supernatural thriller that has some of the same things that I appreciated about this year's sleeper hit BARBARIAN, in terms of taking an iterative approach to the characters and setting, showing us just a bit at a time until the whole picture of what's going on becomes clear. I'll admit that I was disappointed that we didn't get more with Venitia Stevenson as Nan before she gets disappeared from the movie, I thought she was actually a pretty gutsy and resourceful heroine for 1960 and it would have been fun to maybe have her fate reversed with her brother's. All in all though, it's a fun and surprisingly creepy movie with a great performance from Christopher Lee that somewhat prefigures his turn as Lord Summerisle in THE WICKER MAN.
