HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT FIFTEEN: Even weirder and more self-aware and sex-crazed than I had heard. I can see a clear lineage between this movie and things like Rocky Horror or the Addams Family, but it also underlines that Whale was in many ways a comedy director at heart. I've felt for a long time that Mel Brooks didn't make "Young Frankenstein" as a parody of Whale's Frankenstein movies, but as kind of a remake-quel that punched up the jokes that were already there. I have to assume that a young Brooks must have seen this movie at some crucial junction and absorbed it as part of his adult comedic sensibility.
