Hooptober, Night Thirteen: + Cult Movie Challenge Week 40: Gothic Horror Week I'll admit that I'm in kind of the same boat as the original 1930s audience for this one, and didn't quite get it on the first watch. Part of that is my fault for trying to watch a somewhat challenging movie on a weeknight after eating a big dinner. But thinking back on it now, I sort of feel the same way that some people do after seeing a Lynch or Jodorowsky film without having any context for them beforehand. I listened to the Criterion commentary while getting ready for bed, and that helped me understand that I wasn't alone here; In fact the critic doing the commentary also seemed somewhat perplexed by the film too, which was also comforting. I think I may just have to give this one another whirl sometime and see how I feel.
