A short little Spanish crime-thriller from legendary Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. One of only two short films he's ever let be released to the public. It's kind of amazing to me that this doesn't have as positive a buzz as his later effort, the one joke horror-comedy Geometría. Doña Lupe is far more impressive content-wise, especially when you consider how he was only 19 when he made it! It's got a basic, but solid plot about a financially broke old widow woman facing off against two crooked cops taking advantage of her, and despite the shoestring budget actually manages to have some visual flair. There's even a decent action shoot-out featuring the kind of blood and gore that would be one of the defining aspects of its director's career years later. It's not essential by any means, but hardcore cinephiles can get a kick out of seeing what the earliest work available from a Best Picture Academy Award winner was like, and walk away pretty impressed with its quality to boot.
