2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 48: J-HORROR WEEK I might have to give this one another spin sometime, but for now I was struck by how this was the first Tsukamoto I've seen that felt like a semi-mainstream thriller. It makes for a slightly weirder-than-normal mainstream thriller, but also a much less interestingly gonzo Tsukamoto film. I liked the visualization of the dream-killer's MO as a scampering shape appearing out of the corner of the dreamer's eye, but found the climactic confrontation hard to parse even for a filmmaker with as much of an appetite for ambiguity as Tsukamoto.
