MANNVANUARY FOUR & 2025 CRITERION CHALLENGE #28: Noir and Neonoir It's taken me WAY too long to catch up to one of my few remaining gaps in the Coen Bros filmography (I've always gravitated more to their comedies), and it's an interesting inflection point in their overall career arc. This is a much funnier film than I had been led to believe, but at the same time it also feels much more seriously-intended than their previous two films. This seems to be where they really established their cred as filmmakers who could tackle genre material with wit and style, and it radiates off of every shot, every line, every casting choice. Per my usual reviewing MO, I'm giving it a 4/5 on a first watch in recognition of its qualities, but feel like subsequent watches could take it even higher in my esteem.
