12/28 -- Yakuza Papers 3: Proxy War An intriguing thematic elaboration on the earlier Yakuza Papers films, which now enter the 1960s. The opening narration mentions the Cold War era conflicts from which this installment takes its name, suggesting that the yakuza wars followed suit. In keeping with this idea, the film centers on the cost of upholding traditional structures when their guardians are unfit for the task, and the degree to which that burden falls upon the young. Like the other films, keeping track of the players and their loyalties can be challenging, but the general shapes of the conflicts themselves are easy enough to track, and series protagonist Hirono remains a compelling character.
