Aside from the bonus of seeing Samuel Jackson in a film role that doesn't typecast him, this movie is too boilerplate to be more than average. There's some dissonance created between the peppier energy that the editing and soundtrack bring at times versus the neo noir story, which calls for something slow, somber, and even bleak.

At first I thought the dissonance could be pointing at something more nuanced that the director wants to convey here. However, the odd attempt to inject a lighter mood into an ending that's anything but finally convinced me that this is just a misfire film and the director was probably straining to find a way to distinguish an underwhelming script by playing around with framing and presentation.
