2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 16: JEAN ROLLIN WEEK Although it might be easy to call this a lower-budget French version of George Romero's "The Crazies", I feel like that comparison sort of devalues what Jean Rollin is doing here. Whereas "Crazies" felt like Romero trying to recapture his past success with "Night of the Living Dead" and failing to nail the social satire, "Grapes" is Jean Rollin successfully applying all of the weirdo Gothic aesthetics and eroticism he honed with his vampire movies to Romero's modern zombie template, and coming out with something pretty original. Although the pace sometimes drags and the zero-budget gore effects feel very rudimentary, the creepy atmosphere and economical characterizations are surprisingly effective.
