Released the same year as Witchhammer (1970), Mark of the Devil is kind of like its quirky little cousin, both sharing Witchfinder General (1968) as their grandparent. Witchhammer takes place in the 1600s and Mark of the Devil takes place in the 1700s, this is made abundantly clear from how Devil's music is more whimsical to match the lavenders and crimsons of its Ren Faire costuming. Quirky whimsies aside, this was a very good telling of the witch-hunts in eastern Europe and depicted the sadistic brutality that the townsfolk faced at the hands of those in hypocritical power quite vividly; it's just incredible that nothing ever changes.
