a review of 迷离幻境

HOOPTOBER, NIGHT TWENTY-THREE: I went into this one pretty much cold, aside from the bits and pieces of the plot that I got from Mitzi Peirone's interview on the Switchblade Sisters podcast. I think this will be one that I need to revisit again sometime soon, because I'm not certain I was in the right headspace to enjoy what it was doing. There's something about the way that information was doled out to the audience at certain times that felt insufficient, while at other times it felt not-insufficient-enough and I just wanted to see some forward motion. There was a lot of emphasis on the "rules" of the game, although the way the plot played out didn't seem to necessarily demonstrate them in a way that seemed clear. There is a lot to like about the film's occasional detours into a giallo-influenced psychedelia, although I would have liked for there to have been a bit more to establish the movie's base reality (and the base reality underneath the base reality, so to speak) to make the final act have a bit more impact.
